by vivrant thang on old school friday
Great theme this week with far too many possibilities.
I could have gone with some classic grinding under the red light in the basement tunes like “Break Up To Make Up” by The Stylistics and “Kiss and Say Goodbye” by the Manhattans.
I know Mary’s entire “My Life” album got me through some thangs.
Can’t forget the ultimate break up song with those unforgettable lyrics:
You gotta get on outta here with that alley-cat-coat-wearing, punch-bucket-shoe-wearing crumbcake I saw you with. Cause you dismissed!
That’s right, Silly rabbit, tricks are made for kids, don’t you know that.
You without me is like corn flakes without the milk!
This is my world. You’re just a squirrel trying to get a nut!
Now get on outta here.
Scat!
Don’t touch that coat…
Still hilarious over 20 years later.
I decided to consult my top songs list and came up with two of my personal faves, “Before I Let Go” by Blackstreet and “Goodbye Love,” by Guy. I guess I’m kind of nostalgic for the return of the group.
Before I Let Go (check out young tenderoni Omar Epps and Shari Headley in the video)
Goodbye Love (I MISS Guy)
Hope you enjoyed my picks today. The party is far from over! Check out the offerings from the other Old School Friday participants.

absolute CLASSIC choices.
You great great musical taste.
Kiss and Say Goodbye was one of the best breakup songs ever made. I think Toni Braxton’s Breathe Again and Love Shoulda Brought You Home were monsters. And so is Walked Outta Heaven – Jagged Edge.

I’ve been waiting for the perfect theme to bust out my Orange Juice Jones, and I was a second away from posting guy, but I would have loved to hear some Mary J Blige.

“just a squirrel in my world trying to get a nut”. Everytime I hear that it cracks me up!
Couldn’t play the first cut, but the second was really good even though this is the first time I’ve heard it.
I put a little funk in my break up song by the Ohio Players. Hope you get a chance to drop by.
Have a great weekend!

Two of my all time favorite “play it till the needle breaks” records. I’m probably going to be repeating your selections in the background while I go comment on the ones I haven’t hit yet.

@ Don – Ya know, I thought about some Toni too. You are absolutely right. Those are two of my fave songs by her too. That Boomerang soundtrack was fire wasn’t it?
Glad everyone enjoyed the choices. Thanks for stopping by!

Good day,
I love your blog and decided to come out of my lurking status to comment. This isn’t a nostalgic mention but Heather Headley (both albums), really helped me get through a breakup.
How about some BROWNSTONE, Miss those girls.

A couple of things real quick…..saw you post in another blog bout how you miss DJs playing real vinyl at events….playing the OG records means something, I agree. I have 2 events where I still play all original vinyl, one is a funk and soul dance party at Dahlak called “Moneytown”, the other is an old school hip hop night (plus other old school music like disco, electro, funk) which is called “Breakin’ Glass” at Wonderland. search for DJ Nitekrawler on myspace and it has a show listing

@pepperpot – i am so glad you came out of lurk mode! and with some great music to boot. heather headley’s album was definitely a winner in that aspect. where is she by the way? oh we won’t talk about brownstone. i think i played them to death when i was going through. again, thanks for commenting.
@kevin – thanks for dropping by and letting me know. i’ve connected with you on myspace and you just may see me soon.
