NOTE: I FOUND OUT THE OLD SCHOOL FRIDAY THEME TOO LATE FOR A POST. I’LL DEFINITELY BE BACK NEXT WEEK.

Party people! I had to drop in and let you know I’m still very much alive and kicking. This has been a crazy week for me – starting off on Monday night when I attended an intimate show and interview with none other than Phontigallo (of Little Brotherand “Zo and Tigallo Love The 80s”) and DJ Stylus.

I SO wish I had video evidence for you but I was banned from freelancing. Boo hiss! However, Stylus, a man of many  talents, has recaptured the moment for us as only he can. Check it out. I’m also going to need you not to sleep on that new Foreign Exchange Leave It All Behind album in stores October 18th. Download the sampler while you’re there. I know you’re already listening to the Gordon Gartrell Radio podcasts so there’s no need for me to repeat myself. Do you know the music I’ve discovered there? I’m sure you do because you’ve been listening.

After that, the week went full speed ahead. I’m attending the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference this week. So time has not been on my side. As I’m writing this, it’s about 2am and I just got in from a party/concert where Ledisi, Mike Phillips, Chrisette Michele and Raheem Devaughn performed. You know I held you down on the recording tip so look out for that soon.

I have so much I need to blog about and I’m just going to have to make the time to sit down and get it out. I’ve been listening to a lot of music this week: albums by Raphael Saadiq, Eric Benet, Kenny Lattimore, Jazmine Sullivan, Maiysha, Little Dragon, and Little Jackie to name a few.  So look for a review post coming very soon. I promise!

I have some other news to share with you very soon. I’m about to sign on the dotted line for a new venture that should be very good for me as a writer and for Songs In The Key of Life. More on that later.

I’ve been invited to an exclusive listening party where Qtip will spin some tracks from Renaissance. You already know how much I’m anticipating this album. Of course I’ll report back on the hotness you can expect on November 4th. Highly unlikely that I’ll have video evidence so you’ll probably have to take my word for it.

I’ll end this rambling with a little treat to make up for me abandoning my loyal readers for so long. At the performance tonight, Chrisette Michele promised DC that a new album is on the way. Since she loves us so much, she gave us a sneak preview of what we can expect.

I haven’t been able to find mention of this song anywhere. So I guess I should consider this an exclusive? It’s called “War Cry.” Very appro pro, yes?

I’m still alive and kicking folks. Time has just not been on my side. I am still working out how to get myself on a regular posting schedule this summer especially since my stats are actually on the upswing. I attribute that to this and my debut here though. Gotta produce content to keep people coming through. It’s not going to be easy with my schedule in the months ahead – business and pleasure. As I always say, you make time for what’s important to you. The show will go on.

This past weekend, I enjoyed two great shows which I plan to review in the coming days – or as soon as I can get the video uploaded. Saturday night, I braved the brutal temperatures again to see Rahsaan Patterson, Kindred, and a local smooth jazz band called Phaze II at an outdoor venue in DC. I always enjoy Kindred. Ya’ll know how I feel about that Philly soul. I’ve seen Rahsaan several times, but this may be the first time I remember really enjoying the show. His voice is always amazing, but his whole disposition has changed. It didn’t seem as if he felt like he was doing us a favor by performing. He thanked us profusely for coming out, even cracked a few jokey jokes. It was just an all-around good time.

Sunday, was the Raheem Devaughn and Chrisette Michele show. Oh, Dwele was there too. You already know how I feel about “CM” as I like to call her. That girl can do no wrong in my book. I was very impressed by “Radio Raheem’s” set. I’ll do a full review at another time, but that dude didn’t want to get off the stage – and I didn’t want him to. I’ve mentioned before that even after several listens, I wasn’t in love with his second album. However, he has me wanting to give it another chance. Now that’s when you know an artist has put on a hell of a show.

This weekend, in the midst of a flurry of planned activities, I hope to get up to Philly to see Boyz II Men perform for free – followed by some fireworks. Can’t get any better than that.

I’m also excited about seeing my favorite band ever, Earth Wind & Fire, in a couple of weeks. I was hesitant because it’s on a Wednesday night, but I can’t miss them. They just make you feel good.

Actually, with all the things I got rattling around my brain, I need to be lying on a beach somewhere or at least underneath a professional masseuse’s capable hands. However, I have to sacrifice for the love of the music. I’ll be purchasing a new laptop this weekend – with a CD drive that actually works. So I’ll be able to load some new music onto the ‘pod. Music therapy, here I come!

Want to know a few of the albums at the top of my wish list? Barely scratches the surface yet I’m already salivating.

Share with me what’s on your wish list. If you have any of these albums, let me know whether they should remain at the top of my list.

This will likely be my one and only post this week as my holiday begins at about 2pm. Days like this, I love my j.o.

Enjoy people!

So Thankful: “Let’s Rock” With Chrisette Michele

chrisette michele, golden, good girl, i am, if i have my way, Let's Rock: Concert Reviews, lets rock and feeding the music jones, like a dream

chrisette.jpg

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I actually cooked dinner all by myself for the first time. I especially put my foot all in the stuffing, sweet potato pie (from scratch thank you!), and baked mac and cheese. My relatives from The Sticks, South Carolina would have been proud.

As I was cooking, I had time to reflect on some of the things I’m thankful for as the year comes to a close. For one, my career path has taken an interesting turn as I was blessed with a very nice promotion, just in time for the holidays. I’ve been having career woes/ambivalence for a while and this does muddy the waters up a bit, but I’m still very blessed all the same.

Ya’ll should already know the other thing I’m grateful for….being able to feed my music jones with artists like Chrisette Michele. This was my second time seeing her live. First time was up in Philly during one of the numerous outdoor festivals. She ripped it then, but I really couldn’t enjoy it like I wanted since it was raining cats and dogs and we had to stand so far away from her. So I was excited about seeing her again at The Black Cat when she was there in August. I messed around and dropped the ball on getting tickets. I didn’t make that mistake this time. I was on it…and thankfully so. When I arrived, the line was so ridiculous I swore it was Black Friday at Best Buy. Advance purchase and early arrival were definitely the move as I got to bypass the never-ending line and head on inside to get prime videotaping position.

As I mentioned in the Keite Young post, the crowd was more than ready and showed her much love and energy. She could barely even sing her own songs at times, having to share the mic with the crowd. I know artists love that though.Ya’ll should already have I Am in constant rotation, but really you can’t appreciate the music until you’ve heard it live. The rawness and passion in Chrisette’s voice are unmatched by most singers her age, especially in today’s music scene. This girl done experienced some thangs.

If I Have My Way

Golden

While her voice does have a maturity beyond her years, this girl still wants to have fun.

Like A Dream

Good Girl

I managed to fight my way through the mob for a signed poster and a quick photo op.

I could have slapped my own self for not bringing my CD to be signed. In the brief time that I met and observed her, she truly seemed to be very personable, definitely someone you can hang out shopping with (she and I both have a jones for the mall – only she can actually afford to feed her habit). This “Good Girl” definitely has a long career ahead of her. I’m already looking forward to her next album. I’m ready to rock all over again!
