The Roots

No better way to bring in the New Year than rocking out to live music! The calendar is a little light on quantity of shows this week but big on quality.

♫ The Roots are doing their annual New Years Eve set at The Fillmore in Silver Spring. If I had my way, this is where I would be! There are still tickets available. You should be here. Get tickets.

♫ It’s good to see Jon B back on the scene. Forgive him for the title of his latest album and let’s hope he keeps to his late 90s/early 2000s swag instead. Get that slow grind on to “I Do (Whatcha Say Boo)” for me one good time. Get tickets.

Check out the concert calendar for more music events in the DC area in the new year.

Outside the DC area? Attending a hot show this week? Put your fellow music lovers on in the comments.

Got family coming into town this holiday week? Here are Vivrant Thang’s top live show picks:

♫ Thursday: It’s been a minute since I’ve seen the hometown homie, Eric Roberson, perform. He’ll be gracing the stage at The Howard Theatre in DC for the first time on December 27. Get tickets.

♫ Friday: Howard Theatre is once again the place to be! Keith Sweat will be in town  taking DC on a stroll down memory lane of the New Jack Swing era. I am absolutely here for it! Last time I saw Keith Sweat, he was making the late forties look ten years younger! So there’s also that. Get tickets.

Check out the concert calendar for more music events in the DC area this week.

I’m a little tardy to the party this week. A sista has been enjoying the warm weather and indulging in some of her other passions like film, football and sangria!

Here’s a look at what went down around the music blogosphere last week.

  • This week we finally saw videos from two of my favorite songs of 2008. “Take Off the Blues” with Foreign Exchange and “Fly Away” with Sy Smith.
  • Hurry and watch Prince’s video for “Crimson and Clover” and the replay of his appearance on Ellen before he sicks his big, bad web sheriff on you. [via Pinboard]
  • As usual Nu Soul is confabbing with another great artist. Catch up with Amel Larrieux. [via Nu Soul]
  • Get to know Steph Jones [via Beatlife].

Support the blogs. Support the music.

  • Be sure to cop Ayah’s new release, 4:15, and check out her snazzy new website.
  • Missed out on the World Music Conference again this year? Yea me too. Check out DJ Stylus wrap up with live video.  [via VC]
  • Paging Joy Denalane. Audio Diva has been revisiting her 2006 album Born and Raised. This is the last time we saw her. Let’s hope she hurries up this way again. [via AAA]
  • Watch video of songstress Maiysha’s road to the Grammys. [via Nu Soul]
  • Download for free.99 the album that DJ Stylus calls “the best hip-hop album of 2009,” Diamond District’s In The Ruff. [via Pinboard]
  • After checking hard for Yazarah’s 2008 EP The Prelude, I’m ready for the main course! Check out her interview with This Is Real Music.
  • Since this is the DJ Stylus edition of Blog Checka, I’ll also point you in the direction of the retrospective piece on his first 50 mixes  posted on his site for downloading.
  • While you’re downloading mixes, check out the Bama Love Soul podcast. Plenty of SITKOL-approved artists on this one. [via Bama Love Soul]

blog roundup, good soul blogs to read

envogue1

Here’s what’s good around the blogsphere this week. Check it!

  • Ya’ll know how I feel about UK Soul. Still haven’t got into this? Head on over and download two free Best of British mixes.
  • Sometimes I feel like I “can’t last a day” without another Faith album. Guess I’ll have to settle for her guesting on a track from Lady Tee’s forthcoming album. Sigh. [via Adventures of an Audio Diva]
  • Is it fair to hold artists musically captive with our personal expectations? Weigh in over at Soundnexx.
  • Where in the world is Alice Smith indeed? Yet, I’m sure Keylolo Cole will have another album out by year’s end. [via Soul Bounce]
  • One of the highlights of Essence Festival this summer will be seeing the reunion of En Vogue up close and personal. Until then, watch footage of them performing on the Trumpet Awards. [via Pinboard]
  • Since I disagree with half the picks on this list of essential albums of the 90s, maybe I should just do my own. Stay tuned!
  • Tawiah keeps a sista feenin for more. Check out a new track with producer Zed Bias. Bang this in your whips. [via Moovmnt]
  • Get to know Chester Gregory [via Nu-Soul Magazine]
  • Omar was in LA a couple nights ago. I wonder if he turned it out like he did in DC. Hell, I know he did! If you were there, tell me about it in the comments. [via Beatlife]

It’s on and poppin baby! Rock the Bells 2009 lineup has been announced by one of the nicest freestylers in the game. As hot as the lineup is, I hope Q-Tip, Meth and Red are among the special guests that pop up.

As always, support these blogs and the music they promote. Leave a comment or two!
