blog roundups, good soul music sites

Here’s what caught my eye around the blogosphere this week.

  • Bilal + The Roots = Backdoor Man FTW!
  • From SXSW: Common +Erykah Badu + Kanye = The Light FTMFW!
  • Speaking of Common, I never thought I would love a version of “Come Close” more than the original. Ill Mami of SoulBounce changed my mind on that! Check out Common reimagined.
  • Ever wonder who is responsible for creating the playlists that keep the first family collective heads nodding while they are on Air Force One?
  • Choklate is back. Read the interview. Listen to the new tracks. <—-hotness
  • Do you have as much disdain for Chrisette Michele’s album cover as I do? Photoshop natzis!
  • New music for your listening pleasure or displeasure by Monica, Ne’a Posey, Antonio Vitale/Tamara Wellons, and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
  • Very soon, I plan to spend a significant amount of time digging in the dusty crates and really studying some of the classics. You have to look back sometimes to really move forward. Podcasts from TGrundy and EJ Flavors will be among my first stops. I also plan to get my hands on an album that’s been out since early February, Leon Ware and Friends.
  • Speaking of podcasts, be sure to check out the latest edition of Friday Favecast where Ill Mami waxes poetic about relationships. Another newly discovered site with great podcasts is GroovyEclectic. You know…for whenever your iPod gets bored.

after midnight series, dj cuzzin b, good soul music blogs, honey soul, soul tracks, the atlantic, true school corporation

Two weeks in a row. Going strong!

Here’s some of the blog posts I’ve enjoyed over the past week.

  • FREE music is never a bad thing right? Get your download on.
  • As if there needed to be any icing on the cake, the DJ at the Foreign Exchange show on Friday night was ridiculous. We all kept looking up, saying “who is the DJ?!” After some investigation, I found out it was DJ Cuzzin B of True School. You’ve heard about him here before. He and 9th Wonder do a radio show live from the NC area each Friday night and he sent a mix from one of the shows. Download it here.
  • nOvaslim over at SoulBounce has put together what I consider one of his hottest mixes, His Soulful Materials.
  • This week marked twelve years since we lost Biggie. Honeysoul links you up to a few tribute mixes.
  • Soul UK shares the Soul Essential Vol I : Nu-Soul Sistas album.
  • What do you think were the greatest R&B albums of the 70s? Soul Tracks polled their readers and announced the results. Of course any listicle of this kind inspires spirited debate. Head on over and join the conversation. While there, place your vote for top albums of the 80s.
  • Tah-Nehisi Coates does a really stupid thing by offering a list of what he feels are essential hip-hop albums. Last I checked, it was 144 comments deep.
  • I know how I’ll be spending this evening – over on Fab Channel watching classic concerts from artists like Rahsaan Patterson, Eric Roberson,  Amp Fiddler, Lizz Wright, Bebel Gilberto, Jose James and Chaka Khan. Only one more day before this site shutters it’s “doors”
  • I am swooning over the After Midnight Series, which combines art and music (two of my favoritest PG13 things in the world). Moovmnt has all the details.

amel larrieux orange glow, eric roberson blog, mark de clive low blog, muhsinah new tracks

SECOND POST OF THE DAY

Trying again to institute this feature on a weekly basis. Hold me to it!

In the spirit of spreading the linky love, here’s a roundup of posts I enjoyed over the past week. As I’ve mentioned, I read a lot of blogs and often fall WAY behind. I hope you find some new blogs here to stalk so you can share in my misery!

  • My live concert videos are getting lots of artist love here lately! Eric Roberson posted my video from his Inauguration weekend concert on his blog in which he took my camera and recorded himself performing. Mark de Clive-Lowe posted most of my videos on his blog from his show here in DC. You know, the one I raved about. Check em out!
  • New music from Muhsinah posted on her Myspace page today. Head on over to Fresh Selects and download a dope new track from her upcoming project Oscillations: The Triangle, which drops in April. Visit her Myspace page for tour dates in US and Europe. She’ll be performing here in DC with Teedra Moses on April 2nd.
  • Amel Larrieux is back. Listen to a snippet of the first of many digital tracks she plans to release this year, “Orange Glow.” I think you’ll agree that it’s burning up!
  • I don’t care what ya’ll say about Prince, you can’t say he don’t care about us poor folks. He’s releasing a 3-CD set at Target for only $12!
  • It’s ladies night over at Soul UK’s new blog. Check out some of the underrated artists he’s feeling these days.
  • Join Audio Diva on her journey to discover one new artist a day. Believe me, that is totally easy to do. First up, get to know VV Brown.
  • Read Soul Tracks mini-reviews of albums by Jamie Foxx, Kameron Corvet, and Bobby Valentino to name a few.
  • I love discovering artists before the folks that are supposed to be up on these things. But glad to know Zaki Ibrahim is getting some shine. Good look for her to be performing at SXSW. Well deserved.
  • If you’re local, keep your eye on my concert calendar. I’ll be closing out this week with Alice Russell, Foreign Exchange with J*Davey. Later this month, I’m taking this concert train on the road to the ATL to see Heston and Julie Dexter.

blog anniversary, songs in the key of life blog

by vivrant thang on my first blogoversary

While I was busy preparing another Old School Friday post on the 5th, I should have also been celebrating my 1st blogoversary. I knew I started this blog last September but I was thinking that this was my first post. How could I have forgotten that I started it all with Miss Jilly from Philly and “Golden.” I was pretty damn proud of that one. Many bloggers reflect back on how bad their early posts were. I will say mine were much shorter back then.

My posting was very sporadic at first. I don’t think I really unpacked my bags and settled in until November or December. From that first post, all I knew is that I was going to use music to talk about whatever was on my mind.

I never intended to start writing these long-winded concert reviews.

And I never knew that posting my never-ending list of favorite songs (which I am still struggling not to update because the page has become too unmanageable) would be such a hit.

Who knew that an off the cuff rant about the attack on Serena Williams’ ass-ets would be my second most visited post. Gee, I wonder why?

And in case you didn’t know, there are a LOT of “other women” out there and they need a soundtrack to their lives.

I was so excited the day I randomly came across a blog meme that was right up my alley. Did someone say Old School – on a Friday? The cherry on top was meeting some of the coolest folks in the black blogosphere.

I’ve written what I feel were some damn good posts which I’ve rounded up for you here and here, but I’m most proud of my participation in the week-long call to action, Black Blogging to End AIDS and the ways I integrated music into posts on a topic so serious to me. I don’t consider myself an e-activist by any means. So I was glad to be able to use this space to participate in a movement.

I know I sound like a broken record when I say that after a year, I still don’t know where this blog is going. I just know that as long as ya’ll are around and feeling what I’m doing here, I’ll keep cranking something out. From my very first commenter who still pops in and checks on me today, to one of my favorite readers from the UK, to the new folks that stumble in everyday, I am so grateful for each and every one of you. I read your comments on the way into work some mornings and they change my whole disposition for the day.

Even after a year, I’m still battling with how much more personal I’ll get here. The more I become linked in to all these social networks with people who actually know me in real life, the easier that decision becomes! Besides, I’ve put my mug on the front page now so there’s no more hiding out. The  jury is still deliberating but what I can promise is to keep finding new and interesting ways to talk about non mainstream music and how it affects my life. I don’t want this to become solely a music blog because I don’t want to be forced to talk about Solange’s rants or Ciara’s nekked booty (although I will say this spread should effectively kill any comparisons to Baby Girl because she never had to show her ass to remain relevant. She had talent.)

I need to keep the personal spin to it. I have to be able to holla and throw up both my hands. Unleash my lethal side eye every once in a blue moon (LONG overdue for one of those).

You can definitely expect more concert reviews, more music therapy and more spotlight on artists that you should know. I’ve been asked to start doing some album reviews as well. So expect those in the coming weeks as I get my hands on some of the most highly-anticipated albums of the year.

Remember, when this space is dark, remember you can always find twittering or obsessively changing my music and my all-artist top friends on Myspace.

I’m not the only one celebrating a blogoversary. Don of Minus The Bars, one of my first and most consistently supportive male commenters) is celebrating all week. Our blogs were born a week apart. They’re Virgos 🙂 Check him out and leave him a comment. Well-written, entertaining posts over there. Great example of how a few early supporters turned into a whole community.
