Is this thing on?

My last drive-by post was about Stevie Wonder. So why not keep the party going. After all, this is a blog named for one of the most classic albums ever created!

Last December, I flew to LA for Stevie’s annual House of Toys concert, where he performed Songs in the Key of Life in its entirety for the first time ever. Nothing but death would keep me from it.

I intended to blog about it and all that good stuff. But I did the next best thing. I Instagramed the hell out of it.

I donned my finest, most-treasured jewels

and headed over to Nokia Live Theatre for one of the most special musical experiences of my entire life. It was an honor to be there and not one moment went by the entire show that I didn’t feel blessed beyond measure.

I won’t review the show almost a year later. You can read about it here.

From the beginning, I knew Stevie would take this show on the road. So today’s announcement came as no surprise. Music lovers in 11 cities across the country will get to experience what we all did that December night—three hours of complete musical bliss. Yours truly intends to be in the house again. This will make three times that i’ve seen Stevie live. It still doesn’t seem like it’s enough.

Check out the lineup. This one is worth traveling for if it’s not coming to your local music arena. I’m considering going in DC and Philly.

November 6 – New York, NY at Madison Square Garden (On Sale: September 22, 10am EST)
November 9 – Washington, DC at Verizon Center (On Sale: September 29, 10am EST)
November 11 – Boston, MA at TD Garden (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 14 – Chicago, IL at United Center (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 16 – Philadelphia, PA at Wells Fargo Center (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 20 – Auburn Hills, MI at The Palace of Auburn Hills (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 22 – Atlanta, GA at Philips Arena (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 25 – Toronto, ON at Air Canada Centre (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 29 – Las Vegas, NV at MGM Grand Garden Arena (On Sale September 29, 10am PDT)
December 3 – Seattle, WA at Key Arena (On Sale September 22, 10am PDT)
December 5 – Oakland, CA at Oracle Arena (On Sale September 29, 10am PDT)

Purchase tickets to the shows here.

There are pre-sales for those that must be front and center. Tickets go on sale for Citicard holders on September 16th through Citi Private Pass. There’s also a Facebook Fan pre-sale sponsored by LiveNation. The code is KEY.

Do YOU plan to be front and center at this show?

Here’s a sneak peak of what I hope goes down in your city:

Check out India Arie, who joined Stevie on a couple songs, getting down with the get down!

Do You Know What Today Is? It’s My Blogoversarryyyy

blog anniversary, songs in the key of life blog

by vivrant thang on my first blogoversary

While I was busy preparing another Old School Friday post on the 5th, I should have also been celebrating my 1st blogoversary. I knew I started this blog last September but I was thinking that this was my first post. How could I have forgotten that I started it all with Miss Jilly from Philly and “Golden.” I was pretty damn proud of that one. Many bloggers reflect back on how bad their early posts were. I will say mine were much shorter back then.

My posting was very sporadic at first. I don’t think I really unpacked my bags and settled in until November or December. From that first post, all I knew is that I was going to use music to talk about whatever was on my mind.

I never intended to start writing these long-winded concert reviews.

And I never knew that posting my never-ending list of favorite songs (which I am still struggling not to update because the page has become too unmanageable) would be such a hit.

Who knew that an off the cuff rant about the attack on Serena Williams’ ass-ets would be my second most visited post. Gee, I wonder why?

And in case you didn’t know, there are a LOT of “other women” out there and they need a soundtrack to their lives.

I was so excited the day I randomly came across a blog meme that was right up my alley. Did someone say Old School – on a Friday? The cherry on top was meeting some of the coolest folks in the black blogosphere.

I’ve written what I feel were some damn good posts which I’ve rounded up for you here and here, but I’m most proud of my participation in the week-long call to action, Black Blogging to End AIDS and the ways I integrated music into posts on a topic so serious to me. I don’t consider myself an e-activist by any means. So I was glad to be able to use this space to participate in a movement.

I know I sound like a broken record when I say that after a year, I still don’t know where this blog is going. I just know that as long as ya’ll are around and feeling what I’m doing here, I’ll keep cranking something out. From my very first commenter who still pops in and checks on me today, to one of my favorite readers from the UK, to the new folks that stumble in everyday, I am so grateful for each and every one of you. I read your comments on the way into work some mornings and they change my whole disposition for the day.

Even after a year, I’m still battling with how much more personal I’ll get here. The more I become linked in to all these social networks with people who actually know me in real life, the easier that decision becomes! Besides, I’ve put my mug on the front page now so there’s no more hiding out. The  jury is still deliberating but what I can promise is to keep finding new and interesting ways to talk about non mainstream music and how it affects my life. I don’t want this to become solely a music blog because I don’t want to be forced to talk about Solange’s rants or Ciara’s nekked booty (although I will say this spread should effectively kill any comparisons to Baby Girl because she never had to show her ass to remain relevant. She had talent.)

I need to keep the personal spin to it. I have to be able to holla and throw up both my hands. Unleash my lethal side eye every once in a blue moon (LONG overdue for one of those).

You can definitely expect more concert reviews, more music therapy and more spotlight on artists that you should know. I’ve been asked to start doing some album reviews as well. So expect those in the coming weeks as I get my hands on some of the most highly-anticipated albums of the year.

Remember, when this space is dark, remember you can always find twittering or obsessively changing my music and my all-artist top friends on Myspace.

I’m not the only one celebrating a blogoversary. Don of Minus The Bars, one of my first and most consistently supportive male commenters) is celebrating all week. Our blogs were born a week apart. They’re Virgos 🙂 Check him out and leave him a comment. Well-written, entertaining posts over there. Great example of how a few early supporters turned into a whole community.

I didn’t have to put much thought into this one. There is only ONE  way this could have gone down on a blog named Songs In The Key of Life. We are going to celebrate Stevie as much as we can in these parts. Didn’t matter that he will probably be a popular choice today. That’s just the way it has to go down. Besides, I needed some Stevie today after witnessing an incidence of DWB (driving while black) while I was in the midst of enjoying a concert.

The 8th Wonder of the World has been signed to Motown since he was twelve. He is now 58. With the label, he has produced “35 U.S. albums – 28 major studio releases – with album sales totaling more than 72 million units. The singer/songwriter has scored more than 30 Top Ten Hits, 11 #1 Pop singles, winning 19 Grammys (and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in ’96).”

Bow down to the “Master Blaster” with two songs from the early stages of his career that surely have that Motown sound.

This is going to be a good one today so be sure to check out the other OSF participants.

by vivrant thang on retrospective

I’m really excited by how far this blog has come in the three months I’ve been posting regularly. At first since I didn’t share the URL with a lot of people, I was a bit surprised when I got my first comment so soon after I started writing. I thought I’d be talking to myself for quite a while…and I was okay with that. I wanted to find my way a bit and decide just what I was here to do. Knowing that people were reading made me move a little quicker!

I don’t post daily or several times a day like other folks so this is just my 50th post. Since I’m moving right along with one of my blog resolutions, which is to increase readership and comments, I thought I’d do sort of a retrospective for new readers. I don’t know about you, but I appreciate when a blogger does that because as a person that subscribes to over 150 feeds, which I obviously don’t always keep up with, I need a round-up on occasion. So I intend to do this every 50 posts.

Over these past couple of weeks, some great things have happened as a result of a few posts in particular.

  • Just today, I discovered that CNN has linked to my rant post about the Banita Jacks case under their From The Blogs section. Lawd, take me now. It appears to be powered by some news aggregator but I’m thrilled that it found my post out of all the blogs that I hope are talking about this. I don’t know if it will change soon so check it out!
  • If that wasn’t enough, last week I wrote a post about a HOT party I had the pleasure to attend. Super Producer 9th Wonder and DJ Cuzzin B actually took the time to comment and then 9th Wonder linked to my post from his Myspace blog. If that wasn’t enough, they also added a link to my blog from the True School website, which is also linked from 9th Wonder’s main website. All of this because I simply wrote about what I love: rocking to REAL music. I didn’t expect anyone to find it, much less comment on it. I just had to share it.
  • Shortly after all that, I discovered that my post about “Getting Back” with Little Brother was used on the Facebook page for their upcoming concert in London at The Jazz Cafe. (aside: I wish I lived in London. They have some HOT shows coming up there *gasp and swoon*). There were several excellent posts which I referenced in my own, but they used mine.

Here are some other posts I’ve written that I’d like to spotlight:

The Daily News

  • She’s In a Better Place (rape and murder of 10-month-old Da’Niyah Jackson)
  • Unpretty (death of Dr. Donda West)
  • Why? My Thoughts on the Michael Vick Case
  • Self-Destruction (thoughts on TI and Michael Vick)
  • I Am Not My Hair

Here are the posts that have been among your favorites, according to the stats:

  • My Favorite Things: Top 50 R&B/Soul Songs
  • Other Woman
  • My Favorite Things: Top 10 Songs of 2007
  • No More Drama
  • Young, Gifted, and Black!

I’m also really proud of the blog campaign I participated in last month for World AIDS day. You can see all of the posts here.

For the newbies wanting to know more about Vivrant Thing, check the “Who’s That Girl?” page and the All About Me section.

So there you have it…the highlights thus far. I’d love to hear your comments on some of these past posts if you missed them the first time around.

I have a lot in store for the next 50 posts. So hang tight and enjoy the ride!
