Old School Fridays, songs that have the word heart in the title, songs with the word heart in them

Guess who’s back!

I didn’t mean to be away so long but I’m coming back swinging (now watch ten other people have my same picks because I said that).

Today’s theme is songs with the word “heart” in the title. I found a plethora of songs but decided that since it’s women’s history month, I have to give the ladies some shine in all my OSF posts this month.

Michel’le– Something in Your Heart(1989)
Ya’ll know you used to screetch and squeal right along with her. This was thesong back in ’89. I didn’t know what I was singing, but I was sanging. It’s a crime that this video isn’t on You Tube in it’s proper form. Someone was kind enough to upload it to Myspace.
View it here

Tamia, You Put A Move On My Heart (1995)
This song still gives me chills 14 years later. The lovely Tamia at her best. Notice she’s fully dressed and still hotter than all of these chicks out here today

Whitney Houston -Where Do Broken Hearts Go (1988)
Actually it makes me sad to post old Whitney especially after I watch this fuggery, which I do from time to time when I need a good laugh. I guess I hold a special place in my heart for her since I sang her music at my recital when I took voice lessons. This is one of my favorite songs off the Whitney album.

This ends my official picks. But if you want to enjoy some more good music, here’s some runner-ups which I hope you’ll see posted on other OSF blogs.

  • Atlantic Starr–If Your Heart Isn’t In It (this is on repeat when I play my best of Atlantic Starr. And yes, I play it often!)
  • The Dells–A Heart is a House for Love (Five Heartbeats, let’s hear it for them!)
  • Luther Vandross – Anyone Who Had A Heart (Luther doesn’t need any help but I absolutely love the “duet” with Elton John on the So Amazing tribute album. He’s one of the few that didn’t massacre poor Luther’s music on that one)
  • Mint Condition – Breakin My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes) (This is one of my top 50 songs of all time. Nuff said)
  • Tevin Campbell – Always In My Heart (Still a ridiculous song. That’s why they call Quincy Jones a genius)
  • Toni Braxton & Babyface – Give You My Heart (Boomerang sountrack  and pre-horse’s mane FTW!)
  • Toni Braxton – Unbreak My Heart (when we could still understand the words coming out of Toni’s mouth and when we still wanted Tyson)
  • Whispers– My Heart, Your Heart (need to talk more about my love for The Whispers on here. What ya’ll know bout that? Lil Viv might be conceived off of “In The Mood.” “Lady” is in my top fifty.
  • Whitney Houston, Faith, & Kelly Price– Heartbreak Hotel (Another of my favorite Whit songs. Killer combination. Beautiful scenery. Everyone looked stunning…though years later, I’m still just not sure about that powder blue coat on Kelly.)

d'angelo crusin, d'angelo remake, d'angelo she's always in my hair

dangelo

We’re revisiting the remakes theme this week because you never really can get enough of that funky stuff…when it’s done right.

Since we were on serious D’Angelo album watch earlier this week, I thought I’d keep the good vibes going by featuring a couple of his remakes he did – and did well. But then again, I’m probably biased. And don’t apologize for that.

Crusin, Smokey Robinson

Crusin, D’Angelo

Prince, She’s Always In My Hair

Ya’ll ain’t getting me shut down by the big bad web sheriff so I’m just linking up for this one. View it here.

D’Angelo, She’s Always In My Hair

For real, D’Angelo, if by the slimmest possible chance, you should ever read this, please stop fuggin around and get back to what you were put here to do. Seriously.

I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. Head on over to the other OSF participants sites and keep the party going.

mary j blige, notorious big, old school friday

First to all my regular readers, please forgive the light posting this week. My laptop has the MAJOR cooties. I am currently posting this on my eight year old desktop. The Slowskys would LOVE Old Betsy. So until I’m back up, things will be a bit slow around here too.

The theme for this week is music from your graduation year.  I graduated from Abraham Clark High School in Roselle, NJ in 1994. I had just turned 17 and left for college in Charlotte, NC a few months later.

There were two albums released that year that I believe cannot be left out of any discussion about the history of hip hop and r&b.   Talk about “let my tape rock til my tape popped.” Both of these albums would be near the top of the list if I HAD to choose my top ten albums of all time. I still know every single lyric of every single song on both albums.

None other than Mary J. Blige’s “My Life” ( November 29, 1994) and Biggie’s “Ready to Die.” (July 13, 1994).

Since the 90s was also the decade of the remix, I’ll be posting my favorite remixes of songs from each of these albums.

First up, the Queen who should always come before the King.

Mary J. Blige, “Be Happy” Bad Boy Remix w/Keith Murray

Mary J Blige f/ L Boogie, “Be With You” remix

Ya’ll ready for Notorious? One week from today! If it wasn’t inauguration weekend, I’d be right up in NYC for opening weekend. Brooklyn, stand up! Here’s a couple of track from the King of New York and MY G.O.A.T.

Biggie, “Big Poppa” So So Def remix

Let’s bring it full circle.

Biggie, “One More Chance/Stay With Me” remix f/ Faith and Mary J. Blige (play spot the celebs in the video)

I’m way over the limit but I had fun! Be sure to stop by the other Old School Friday participants sites and revisit music from yesteryear.

old school friday, tv one unsung debarge, tv one unsung donny hathaway, tv one unsung phyllis hyman, tv one unsung series

We have been given free reign for the first OSF of the year.

For those of you who have the station TV One, you may have already seen the ‘Unsung’ ‘series which spotlights artists whose lives and/or career were tragically shortened for one reason or another. So far they have shown the stories of Donny Hathaway, Phyllis Hyman, the Clark Sisters, and Debarge. If you haven’t caught it yet, it replays every so often so please make it a point to catch one or all of the episodes. There are plans for more shows and you can let them know who you think should be featured next.

Today, I decided to celebrate the music of Debarge, Phyllis Hyman and Donny Hathaway. Let me know your thoughts on this series and who you would like to see featured next (Lauryn Hill or Aaliyah anyone?) and some of your favorites from these artists.

Debarge, “I Like It” (“All This Love” is my ultimate favorite. Made my top fifty list)

Donny Hathaway, I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know (“A Song For You” is #1 on my list)

Do yourselves a favor and LISTEN to this song. Fellas, take notes!

Phyllis Hyman, “Living in Confusion” (her version of “Betcha By Golly Wow” with Norman Connors will be my wedding song. “You Know How To Love Me” and this song are tied for second.)

Be sure to stop by the othe OSF participants pages and see what they came up with this week. Looking at the upcoming themes, we are going to really get into some good music in these upcoming weeks so stay tuned!

Old School Friday: Get Your Drank On!

26 Friday Dec 2008

Posted by Vivrant Thang in Feeding The Music Jones, Soundtrack of My Life

I hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday season thus far. Mama Viv arrived in town on Wednesday and we’ve been having good times watching movies, cooking, and dranking! The martinis and wine have been plentiful and will continue to flow through next week as New Years Eve promises to be a good one for me this year.

Which brings us to the theme for this week: Songs You Can Drink To.

I immediately thought of my first choice, “Rather Be With You,” by Bootsy Collins. That song  just makes you want to kick back, put your feet up and sip something real slow. Or for those that like to get down in other ways, it’s the perfect song for that as well. Some of you may remember this from the Academy Award worthy  film, Baby Boy.

While we got our minds on Snoop, although I think this will be a popular choice for today, I just have to post “Gin and Juice.” I used to wear my  Doggystyle cassette out! Knew all the words. Mama Viv and I were just at the liquor store joking about how we were going to be sipping up on some gin and juice.

I doubt there will be a lot of posts today so would be a great time to visit some of the other Old School Friday participants. I would probably have taken the day off as well but I get antsy if I go more than a few days without writing something here. Enjoy the rest of your holiday! I plan to.
