Is this thing on?

My last drive-by post was about Stevie Wonder. So why not keep the party going. After all, this is a blog named for one of the most classic albums ever created!

Last December, I flew to LA for Stevie’s annual House of Toys concert, where he performed Songs in the Key of Life in its entirety for the first time ever. Nothing but death would keep me from it.

I intended to blog about it and all that good stuff. But I did the next best thing. I Instagramed the hell out of it.

I donned my finest, most-treasured jewels

and headed over to Nokia Live Theatre for one of the most special musical experiences of my entire life. It was an honor to be there and not one moment went by the entire show that I didn’t feel blessed beyond measure.

I won’t review the show almost a year later. You can read about it here.

From the beginning, I knew Stevie would take this show on the road. So today’s announcement came as no surprise. Music lovers in 11 cities across the country will get to experience what we all did that December night—three hours of complete musical bliss. Yours truly intends to be in the house again. This will make three times that i’ve seen Stevie live. It still doesn’t seem like it’s enough.

Check out the lineup. This one is worth traveling for if it’s not coming to your local music arena. I’m considering going in DC and Philly.

November 6 – New York, NY at Madison Square Garden (On Sale: September 22, 10am EST)
November 9 – Washington, DC at Verizon Center (On Sale: September 29, 10am EST)
November 11 – Boston, MA at TD Garden (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 14 – Chicago, IL at United Center (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 16 – Philadelphia, PA at Wells Fargo Center (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 20 – Auburn Hills, MI at The Palace of Auburn Hills (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 22 – Atlanta, GA at Philips Arena (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 25 – Toronto, ON at Air Canada Centre (On Sale September 22, 10am EST)
November 29 – Las Vegas, NV at MGM Grand Garden Arena (On Sale September 29, 10am PDT)
December 3 – Seattle, WA at Key Arena (On Sale September 22, 10am PDT)
December 5 – Oakland, CA at Oracle Arena (On Sale September 29, 10am PDT)

Purchase tickets to the shows here.

There are pre-sales for those that must be front and center. Tickets go on sale for Citicard holders on September 16th through Citi Private Pass. There’s also a Facebook Fan pre-sale sponsored by LiveNation. The code is KEY.

Do YOU plan to be front and center at this show?

Here’s a sneak peak of what I hope goes down in your city:

Check out India Arie, who joined Stevie on a couple songs, getting down with the get down!

Stevie Wonder Reacts To Verdict In The Trayvon Martin Case

Another reason why Stevie is the 8th Wonder of the World.

He’s putting his money where his mouth is and pledging never to perform in Florida or any other state where Stand Your Ground laws exist. Activism is nothing new for Stevie though.

Bow down.

First news of the live DVD, a 2009 release and now a live performance on Ellen this past Friday. I was excited to be home to catch the face-to-face and the final song.

I tell you, Stevie Wonder has to be on every television personality’s list of favorite people to interview. Aside from his storied musical career, his personality is an interviewer’s dream. He’s the quintessential Taurus 🙂 We’re talented, a tad raunchy, but always fun!

He talked a bit about his writing process, mentioning how he came to be involved with the Hidden Beach Obama-inspired compilation CD.

Stevie talked about the possibility of being on Dancing With The Stars, which would certainly be groundbreaking in many ways. I hope they find a way to make it happen.

He performed “I Wish” and “All About The Love Again,” from the Hidden Beach CD.

Tune into the Grammys tonight to see if Raphael Saadiq and Stevie win for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group for “Never Give You Up,” a track from The Way I See It. The competition is stiff. “Stay With Me (By The Sea) was one of my top songs of 2008. However, any track that Stevie blesses is a winner.

His live DVD should already be on your Amazon wish list ready to order on March 10th, followed up by an album later this year.

I didn’t have to put much thought into this one. There is only ONE  way this could have gone down on a blog named Songs In The Key of Life. We are going to celebrate Stevie as much as we can in these parts. Didn’t matter that he will probably be a popular choice today. That’s just the way it has to go down. Besides, I needed some Stevie today after witnessing an incidence of DWB (driving while black) while I was in the midst of enjoying a concert.

The 8th Wonder of the World has been signed to Motown since he was twelve. He is now 58. With the label, he has produced “35 U.S. albums – 28 major studio releases – with album sales totaling more than 72 million units. The singer/songwriter has scored more than 30 Top Ten Hits, 11 #1 Pop singles, winning 19 Grammys (and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in ’96).”

Bow down to the “Master Blaster” with two songs from the early stages of his career that surely have that Motown sound.

This is going to be a good one today so be sure to check out the other OSF participants.

‘Happy Birthday’: Celebrating the Life and Music of Stevie Wonder

“When creating music you have to live life – be inspired by life – to create experiences that are worth sharing with the world. ” -Stevie Wonder

I celebrate a lot of artists here on this blog. However, if there was one that that inspires what I do in this space, it would be undoubtedly be the one we call “The 8th Wonder of the World,” Mr. Stevland Hardaway (Judkins) Morris.

When I started conceptualizing this blog, I thought about icons whose music has shown up repeatedly in the soundtrack of my life. Artists like Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind & Fire, Luther, Michael Jackson, Mary J. Blige, and Jill Scott (to name a few). While listening to At The Close of A Century, the name Songs In the Key of Life and the blog’s direction just came to me. Ironically, the album was released the same month I was conceived (September 1976)  and was arguably one of the most influential albums of the decade. My goal here is to inform and influence my readers’ appreciation of real music. So while it was a gutsy move to name my blog after one of the Top 100 albums of all time, something about it felt right.

The running joke has always been that Stevie has been fooling us all these years and can really see. Wouldn’t be hard for me to believe! I’ve always been in awe of his gift of composing music that seems inspired by the beauty he’s seen across the world…and the ugliness. The key word is gift, something he was blessed with probably from the moment he lay in that incubator and lost his sight. He lost one thing, but gained so much more – five decades of blessing us with thirty-five albums chock full of masterpieces. Music that speaks to social and political issues of our time – and they remain relevant decades later. Songs that champion a universal love – one that transcends color or creed. Love of a partner, love of a child, love for what you were born to do, love for yourself.   I don’t know about you, but I am so thankful to know and appreciate his music. (I also feel blessed to have been born exactly one week after him. Taureans rule!)

In these days and times of having to contend with the foolish radio programming that assaults our ears, I’m happy to know that there are DJs that feel his music deeply and want to keep it alive. The best party I attended last year was DJ Spinna’s Wonder-Full Tribute party. When I think back to the emotions I experienced at that party, this is what I see.

If it comes to a city near you, I would strongly urge you not to miss it.

It’s damn near painful to choose a couple of favorite Stevie songs. I managed to do it for my Top Fifty Songs list. I chose “As” and “Ribbon In The Sky.”  The way I’ll limit myself from barraging you with fifty eleven videos that you won’t watch anyway is to share my favorites from Songs In the Key of Life.

How could “As” not be on everyone’s list with lyrics like these?

As around the sun the earth knows she’s revolving
And the rosebuds know to bloom in early May
Just as hate knows love’s the cure
You can rest your mind assure
That I’ll be loving you always
As now can’t reveal the mystery of tomorrow
But in passing will grow older every day
Just as all is born is new
Do know what I say is true
That I’ll be loving you always
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky—ALWAYS
Until the ocean covers every mountain high—ALWAYS
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea—ALWAYS
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream

The Making Of ‘I Wish’ (excellent video to watch if you can only watch one- see the magician creating the magic)

Let’s celebrate Stevie today. The rest of my favorites are on this list. Love to hear about some of his music that would appear on the soundtrack of your life.
