Happy OSF party people!
I heart this theme. Took me on a true trip down memory lane.
I decided to post one song from the 70s, 80s, and the early 90s.
Like Lays, I couldn’t stop at just one so there’s a runner up for each decade.
1977 – the best year of the whole decade in my humble opinion
Thelma Houston, Don’t Leave Me This Way
Runner Up: Anita Ward, Ring My Bell (1979)
1982
Junior, “Mama Used To Say” (This song is so memorable for me during the 80s for some reason!)
Runner Up: Sybil, Don’t Make Me Over (1989)
1991
Lisa Fischer, “How Can I Ease The Pain” (this girl can BLOW…should have blown up!)
Runner Up: Digable Planet, Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like That)
I hope you enjoyed as much as I did!
Be sure to check out the other OSF participants. Have a great weekend!

Happy OSF! Those are great choices. Thelma never had to sing again once her daughter got hot … and I wonder where Junior is now?
I invite your blog readers to check out ‘Ready for the World’ if they have time or inclinaton. I’m proud to say that I never wore a jheri curl back in the day … how about you?
peace, Villager
carpal tunnel be damned, this theme is too good for me to miss, in fact Im going to have to bite your decade-based steez a little bit. I love your picks – great choices. I had to laugh at the Thelma Houston pick…I sang that in karoake once and it was so bad…so, so bad…
Great picks!! I am especially loving the Thelma Houston! I used to love that song!!
We must be some kind of kin, you stay out of MY head!!!!!
Don’t Leave Me This Way is one of my very favorites. That Lisa Fischer song is the BOMB! Excellent choices.
lisa fischer ftw!!! man i tried to put everybody onto that song when it first hit airwaves in the spring of 1991. to this day i am befuddled as to why it didn’t make her a superstar. even though it hit #1 on the r&b chart, it wasn’t a crossover hit. the cd it introduced, so intense, was pretty darn good too.
sybil takes me back to senior year in high school, fall 1989. man that soul II soul beat was du jour for the era…every hit record contained an interpolation of it. sybil’s one-two punch that fall with don’t make me over & walk on by got much play in my walkman on the way to and from school. oh the days…she even had a catchy song to introduce her follow-up cd a year later but the name escapes me…i’ll think of it though.
lmao @ the person who may believe thelma houston is whitney houston’s mother. or does thelma have a famous daughter that i’m not aware of???
we are music kin!
Girl you were rocking with this meme. I loved Lisa Fischer. I went through a break up and that was my WINE AN CHEESE SONG
Ms Lisa can saaannggg! All good choices. Happy OSF!
Wasn’t Lisa Fischer Luther’s background singer?
That girl has one helluva voice on her…
Your choices are great, as usual!
Seeing the clip for “Mama Used To Say” is yet another reason that MTV sucks. Back when this song was out, MTV didn’t play videos by Black artists. Junior was one of the most underrated artists of the 1980s. His follow up tune “Too Late” is first rate too. If you haven’t heard it but would like to, let me know and I can send it to you.
Great selections. I hadn’t heard any of them in quite a while. Thanks for this great post.
Hmm … wonder what ever happened to JR. and Sybil? They were both talents that should have done more – don’t you think?
I’m cracking up about Thelma groovin’ in the record store. That’s how they did MTV back in the day. ROFL!
I’m still clueless at pick #2 that was highlighted at another OSF participant.
omg! i LOVED lisa fischer… every time i hear that song on like old school r&b soul station, i hit that high note at the end…
*and in my head it sounds just like lisa’s*
🙂
