Happy Friday Folks.
This week’s theme is singer turned actor or actor turned singer.
It still hurts to think about “Babygirl” and what a loss the music world suffered seven years ago. Can you believe she would have been 30 next month?
As I’m sure you remember, Aaliyah’s star also shined brightly on the big screen. She had major roles in Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned and was set to film The Matrix at the time of her death.
We’ll forever be missing you BabyGirl. Often imitated, never duplicated. Never. This means you Uncle Cici.
Let’s celebrate her music today with three of my favorites. I chose one from each of her albums, which was HARD because I loved just about every song on One In A Million.
Title track from debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number”
Title track from second album, “One In A Million” (made my top 50 list)
“Rock The Boat” from her last album, Aaliyah. I don’t think we’ve ever seen her look more beautiful (if that’s even possible). It was also one of my favorite videos of hers and is still a bit hard to watch.
Share your favorite Aaliyah songs in the comments and be sure to check out the other OSF participants.
I can hardly believe it’s been 7 years since her untimely death. Great choice and great tribute.
Happy OSF.
The loss of her life was a HUGE loss to the music world aswell as her family!
I love too many of her tracks to mention here but couple of favourites are Rock The Boat, Man Undercover, If Your Girl Only Knew and Are You Feelin’ Me.
I often wonder what type of music she would be releasing if she were still around today … i bet it would be 100% better than the garbage our current ‘hot females’ churn out, it seems, on a weekly basis. She also managed to bring out the best in other artists (i.e. Timbaland & Missy).
Very insightful pick! So often, it seems as though we lose the great talents much too soon!
Goodness, I forgot that she acted. It is truly sad that she was gone so soon…I still remember hearing the news the day that she crashed. She definitely would have still been giving the top artists out there a run for their money.
I loved Aaliyah. So much more she could’ve given us, but gone too soon 😦
As for my favorite song by her? “One in a Million” 🙂
But “Hot Like Fire” was a guilty pleasure. I loved the video; even loved Missy Elliot’s presence on the track 🙂
I still remember the day like it was yesterday. I was at a dancehall party that night and after the announcement, the party was done. Everyone just went home in awe, like we all lost a close friend.
Such a beautiful talent and spirit she was. Great pick hun, Happy OSF. 🙂
Awww how sad, I miss her. I didn’t even think about Aaliyah, which also reminds me that I didn’t think about Tupac, either. I am slipping on my game. One In A Million will always be my favorite Aaliyah song, the 808 productions on that song is amazing. Timbaland at his finest.
That Rock the Boat Cd was a very good cd, it’s sad because that CD solidified her place in pop music.
I had a list of people that I was going to use…and even had the Juice scene up with Q and Bishop at the lockers posted before I changed my mind and went with Jamie…justifying that this was about “singers” not rappers.
Baby Girl was on that list…but I still find it painful to even look at that Rock the Boat vid…
I LOVE Aaliyah. I wish she were alive because music SUCKS nowadays. I’d take her over Beyonce ANY day.
My favorites:
– re-make of Isley Brothers Choosy Lover
– One in a Million
– 4 Page Letter
– We Need a Resolution
– At Your Best
and MANY others whose names are escaping my memory right now due to being tired.
My oldest younger brother and I used to play her One in a Million album every single day. He thought she was fine as hell and loved her music, and I loved her music and wished I could dance like her. She seemed to be a genunely nice person and I used to wish that I could meet her and be her friend.
Coincidentally, she died at the same time that I was on a plane. I found out after I landed. Shocked and amazed and saddened.
May she forever rest in peace.
Yeah, Aaliyah is definitely one of my faves, and is sorely missed. I’m puttin One in a Million back in rotation.
I love every Aaliyah song there ever was. She didn’t make one misstep. “A Girl Like Me” and “Never Givin’ Up” stayed on repeat, along with “Be Without You” and the “Are You That Somebody” video. She had the best videos!
It didn’t even cross my mind to choose Aaliyah. Great pick.
Rock the boat is one of my favorite songs. I saw the video the other day and shed a few tears. Aaliyah was beautiful inside and out and is definitely missed. I wonder what her career would be at this moment if she was still here.
Four Page Letter and Are You That Somebody are a few of my favs. She also did a hell of a job on At Your Best.
RIP Baby Girl.
WOW I still really really miss her like it all happened last week! She has so much swag!!!
All of her songs are my favs and I still listen to her on a regular basis..My all time fav has to be “It’s Whatever”
This is a good one…4 Page Letter was my favorite, and More Than a Woman is a good one too..
Oh man! I can’t even tell you how much baby girl is missed! An awesome talent taken too soon! I loved almost every song from “Age Aint Nothing But A Number” right down to “Rock The Boat”!
she is surely missed…
Girl, I had to come back and add the “At Your Best (remix)”. Wish Ms. Aaliyah was still here with us!
