♫ Thursday: It’s been a minute since I’ve seen the hometown homie, Eric Roberson, perform. He’ll be gracing the stage at The Howard Theatre in DC for the first time on December 27. Get tickets.

♫ Friday: Howard Theatre is once again the place to be! Keith Sweat will be in town  taking DC on a stroll down memory lane of the New Jack Swing era. I am absolutely here for it! Last time I saw Keith Sweat, he was making the late forties look ten years younger! So there’s also that. Get tickets.

Check out the concert calendar for more music events in the DC area this week.

Outside the DC area? Attending a hot show this week? Put your fellow music lovers on in the comments.

Any last minute holiday shoppers out there? Buying Kwanzaa gifts this year?

I used my favorite social media tool, Pinterest, to curate a mini gift guide for that special music lover in your life. The board contains apparel, housewares, jewelry, bags, and merch from a couple of my favorite artists.

I personally can’t get enough of music tees and jewelry. That is always a good gift for the kid. I will have to share my collection someday soon.

Visit my Pinterest board of holiday gift ideas for the soul music lover in your life. If you’re not on Pinterest and have your eye on something you see, contact me or leave a comment and I’ll send you the link.

If nothing there strikes your fancy, tickets to an upcoming live show are always a win.

Happy (Last Minute) Shopping!

You already know how I feel about Omar. I don’t travel four hours for just any ole artist.

So when this news showed up in my Facebook news feed, I hitmydougiedroppeddownandgotmyeagleon!

omarcoming

Omar IS ‘the man’ and it’s been far too long—almost 7 years to be exact—since we’ve had a full length effort from the godfather of UK soul. The album has been ready for some time now but he had to first find a new label home.  “The Man” will feature a re-release of perennial favorite “There’s Nothing Like This.” I don’t know how he can improve on perfection but I am here for it!

To tide us over to that glorious day (hopefully in March) when “The Man” is finally released, feast your ears on a few tracks he’s blessed with his vocals this year.

Are you familiar with Omar’s music? Are you as excited about this news as I am?

Connect with Omar on Facebook and Twitter to stay updated on the latest news about “The Man.”

Update: Thanks to Phonte of The Foreign Exchange for tweeting out this video of Omar on the streets of Copenhagen singing what may be the title track of the new album.  This thing right here…..this is why I traveled four hours to see this man in concert.

Gotta get that live music fix this week? Here are Vivrant Thang’s top live show picks this week:

♫ Friday and Saturday: Syleena Johnson invites you to her two night stand at Blues Alley. One show is already sold out! [Get tickets.]

♫ Thursday: A Liv Suite Christmas featuring Deborah Bond, Levi Stephens, Kenny Wesley, Snuhgie Stocks, Lauren White and Special Guest Hostess Wendy Mcintyre; all on one stage performing some of our favorite holiday selections.
[Win tickets] [Buy tickets]

♫ Friday: Amel Larrieux is back at the Howard Theatre. Amel was in town earlier this year and tore the stage down! It was definitely one of the most memorable shows I’ve been to this year.

Check out the concert calendar for more music events in the DC area this week.

Music Playlist for Healing: Love’s In Need Of Love Today

music blog, music for loss, playlist for healing in times of national tragedy, songs to listen to when you lose a loved one, soul music

I am truly at a loss over yesterday’s events in Connecticut.

For my international readers (hey ya’ll!) and those in the US who have been living in the deepest of caves, a monster forced his way into an elementary school in Newton, Connecticut and shot and killed 26 people. 20 of them were students. Babies. I literally feel sick to my stomach just typing this.

We don’t know why he did it. The coverage of this story and the misinformation being spread out there has been  horrific. I hesitate to link to any news source out there because the media has been disgustingly irresponsible in their coverage, putting out false information in a rush to be the first ones on the scene. We won’t talk about the cable news outlets and their tragedy porn.

MSNBC and their tragedy porn….they have shown photo of little girl obviously screaming in horror 6 times in 2 minutes.

December 14, 2012

President Obama’s statement about the tragedy in Connecticut was just painful to watch. While he is the President, he was also speaking as the father of two girls.

The only things that have been getting me through this (and all of the multiple tragedies this year) is time with loved ones, prayer and of course, music. Music heals.

Here’s a playlist I put together on my favorite music app, Spotify. (If you’re not on there, you should be. More on that later.)

I hope that this helps those out there that are hurting over this in some small way. Regardless of whether you are personally affected by this, it’s a national tragedy. Families are waking up today, if they even slept, without the babies they sent to school yesterday. To school. A child is waking up without his mother.  This is hard, ya’ll.

What songs do you listen to when you need to be lifted up in times of tragedy? If you’ve experienced a lot of loss in your family (as I have), what songs have helped you to heal? Help me update this playlist.
