I could just kiss whoever came up with this week’s theme. If you didn’t already know, I got mad love for Philly…the city and the soul.  I call Philly my second home because it’s nothing for me to head up there for a show at my favorite venue. I’m actually heading up there next weekend to rock out all day with The Roots. I can’t forget to mention that it’s also the home of my 2009 Superbowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles!

I’ve already covered a couple of my favorite Philly artists here and here. My first inclination was to ignore the “before 1993” requirement and hip you to some Philly flava you need to have in your ear. Look for that post next week. There’s certainly enough talent coming out of the city to cover several posts. Besides, we need to first look back first before we move forward.

No other way to start this off than by talking about Gamble and Huff, a song-writing and producing duo who were the pioneers of Philadelphia soul. They founded Philadelphia International Records in 1991, which was home to many of the artists I’ve featured here. Together and independently, they have written and produced over 170 platinum and gold albums for artists such as The Jacksons, The Intruders, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Wilson Pickett and The Mighty Mighty OJays….

Ojays, Philadelphia

I Love Music (produced by Gamble & Huff)

Backstabbers (produced by Gamble & Huff)

Family Reunion

Phyllis Hyman, Lancaster, PA

You Know How To Love Me

Living All Alone

Teddy Pendergrass, Philadelphia, PA

Love TKO

Close The Door

Hall and Oates, Philadelphia (met at Temple)

Ya’ll already know Sara Smile is my song so I changed it up this time.

I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)

Patti Labelle, West Philadelphia, PA

Somebody Loves You Baby

When You’ve Been Blessed

Stylistics, one of the best known Philly soul groups in the 70s

You Make Me Feel Brand New

Hurry Up This Way Again

I just know you haven’t had enough. Head on over to the other participants’ blogs and get some more of that classic Philly soul…if you have any energy left!

The Night I Fell Back In Love With Hip-Hop

emcees, krs one, krs one and chief rocka busy bee, krs one at the black cat, krs one concert reviews, legends of hip hop tour, real hip hop

by vivrant thang on feeding the music jones

Actually the title is a little deceiving because this love affair started up again last year with the Hip Hop Honors Tour.

I’ve never been a hip hop head per se. Always been more of an R&B junkie. Mary, Total, Faith, Jodeci, Mint Condition, SWV, Dru Hill, and Zhane were a fewof the artists playing on the soundtrack to my life in my formative years. However, in between my obession with the New Jack Swing Era, emcees like Biggie, Big Daddy Kane, Salt & Pepa, MC Lyte, Snoop, and LL still got play on my pink boom box. To this day, I can still recite most of the lyrics to all their songs. And I’m proud of that.

Will these kids growing up today be able to do the same thing in 10-15 years?

Hell no because half these fools with songs in the rotation today ain’t saying shit. Who can even understand what they’re saying? And who is even listening? Doesn’t matter because it’s all about the beat and whether it can make asses bounce in da club and on the television screen.

I’ve been gone for a minute and didn’t mean to come back ranting. Besides, surely I’m preaching to the choir. It’s just that seeing KRS-One perform over the holiday weekend just took me back to the time when I was listening to the lyrics…taking them to heart, committing them to memory because they meant something. When battling was done on wax and not in the streets with heat.

When I’m in a jam, with my homegirl Jill
My cousin Trey across the room with a posse to kill
So I step in the middle, shake it just a little
Wait for some female to step up and pop junk
Give my cousin a cue, treat the girl like a punk
Now I’m not tryin to say that I’m into static
But yo if you cause it, yup, we gotta have it
Cause I ain’t goin out like a sucker no way
So I sit around the way for you to make my day
We can go for the hands, better yet for the words
Cause you’ll be ignored, and at the same time, I’ll be heard
throughout the city, the town and the country
The beat is funky, my rhyme is spunky
There is no delayin in the rhyme I’m sayin
Neither are the flaws of what my DJ is playin
So SIT BACK Jack, and listen to this
It’s 10% Dis..
cause I’m just about ready to fly this fist
against your lips!

You were rapping along weren’t you?

So with the exception of a few emcees in the game today that I like – ones that “don’t be getting no airplay,” I choose to live in the past. Seeing KRS-One perform reminded me of why I’m dropping $80 to be three rows from the stage for this show.

Needs some girl power though. Was Lyte too busy promoting Almost September?

KRS-One, backed up by Chief Rocka Busy Bee, came through and delivered the message. I saw him last year at the Congressional Black Caucus Black party but the experience wasn’t quite the same with what I affectionately like to call the “Martha’s Vineyard crowd.” True hip hop heads of all races were packed into the venue to see a true emcee take the stage. You could literally see the excitement on everyone’s faces. When he finally came on, I didn’t think I was going to be able to hold on to my camera!

Throughout the show, folx were passing wax, kicks off their feet, t-shirts off their backs, hats off their heads- anything they could get their hands on for him and Busy Bee to sign. The energy was high and the temperature was on hell, just like a real house party.

There were some young boys in the audience, as you’ll see on one of the videos. Had to be no more than ten years old which got the major side-eye from me. We were at a bar, after midnight, where folks were dranking. What were they doing there?! However, after KRS pulled them on the stage and showed them what real hip-hop was, I was glad they were there (sort of). One of them might even be on that stage ten years from now spitting the real hip-hop – which I hope was the idea.

They also threw autographed tennis balls into audience. I got mine signed by Busy too. Gotta put that up for safekeeping along with my wax. School Lil Vivrant one day. Who knows what she’ll have to listen to by then? *shudders at the thought*

Enjoy some videos from the show and fall back in love (or deeper in love) with REAL hip-hop. More on my You Tube channel.

Are you still in love with hip-hop? Which emcees keep that love affair going?

Medley of songs including one of my favorites, Black Coppppp!

Love’s Gonna Get’cha (Now tell me what the f*ck am I supposed to do?)

KRS-One breaking down hip-hop so it can forever and consistently be broken (how many of these songs can you name?!)

“You Must Learn” and “Criminal Minded”

I was going to take a week off when I saw the theme since I already covered this a few weeks ago. Besides, I am way overdue for a Side Eye of the Week post.  However since I loves me a bass guitarist, I couldn’t miss out.

In saying that, I admit I know very few so I had to put my thinking cap on for this one. However, my cap is quite full with all I got going on right now (will share more in the coming weeks). Luckily, as I was checking out all the musical madness that is going on in DC and surrounding areas this summer, I came across this and my choice was clear.

Marcus Miller is a Grammy-award winning jazz artist who plays multiple instruments, including the bass. He has shared the stage with the likes of Miles Davis (nuff said), Luther, and David Sanborn.  I’ve seen him perform at the Capital Jazz Fest and he’s hosting the Playboy Jazz Cruise/Festival early next year. I likes the sound of that! His 10th solo album, Marcus, was just released in March.

Power of Soul (with love to Jimi Hendrix)

Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten (Dream Team ya’ll and they are coming here!)

Check out some of his other music on his Myspace page. He’s got a rendition of Neicy Williams’ “Free” featuring Corrine Bailey Rae as well as a funky version of Robin Thicke’s “Lost Without You.” Oh yea that bass sounds nice!

The party’s not over. Check out some of the other Old School Friday participants.

Better With Time

20 Tuesday May 2008

better with time boney james and bilal, good soul music, women embracing their thirties, women in their thirties

by vivrant thang on all about me

It’s getting better with time
Getting better baby so much better baby
Getting better with time
Just like an old fine wine
So much better baby
Like an old soul record baby

– Boney James f/Bilal

Today, I’m celebrating my 31st birthday.

Last year around this time I was in Miami preparing for a day at the spa followed by a night of partying in South Beach. Leading up to the big day, I remember feeling a slight sense of panic at leaving my twenties behind. It was very slight though. Most of my friends are well over thirty and assure me that my thirties will be the best time of my life.

I’m only one year in and I can already reflect back on my twenties and say that I have certainly gotten better with time. I spent much of the decade trapped inside a fat suit that was prevented me from being as fly and fabulous as I am now…although I did a helluva job at pretending. I spent a large chunk of that period stuck in a job that was comfortable and safe but after a while, no longer challenged me or allowed me to showcase all of my professional talents. I allowed myself to be in a series of relationships with issue-laden commitment-phobes and fools that probably weren’t good for much more than what dangled between their legs. I now realize a lot of the time I lived in fear…fear of success, fear of being who the hell I am and demanding that everybody in my world accept that girl. Truth be told, I was still figuring out who that girl is. The picture is getting clearer everyday.

I don’t know what the rest of the year or the next five holds. I have a vision of what I would like to see happen but I know that ultimately I’m not completely in control. A girlfriend and former co-worker sent me a note today to say that her forty-something year old brother died of a heart attack in his sleep a few weeks ago. You just don’t know when your number will come up. She’s handling it as best she can because she has faith in God and his reasoning, although it must be hard.

That level of faith really inspires me and puts some things in perspective. As cliche as it is, I am going to continue to embrace what is present in my life and not focus on what’s lacking or what I’ve lost. I’ve been given another year. I’m able to pay my mortgage with weekly paychecks from my new job. I’m able to treat myself to the things that make me happy like concerts, new music, and vacations. I have a very close relationship with my mother and a few true lifetime friends. Doors are opening that will allow me to continue to pursue what I’ve been put here to do.

Most importantly, at 31, I’ve learned from the mistakes of my twenties. I am always cognizant of the fact that my time here can be up at any moment. I don’t want to look back when I’m old and gray (if I’m so fortunate) and realize I wasted my life stuck on repeat. Scared to step into my destiny. Dealing with the same fuckery in my relationships. Stagnant in my career.

So far, so good. Just like a fine wine, I’m just getting better with time.

What age or period of time in your life did you start coming into your own? If you’re not there yet, are you on your way?

Old School Friday: Remakes

16 Friday May 2008

bill withers, classic r&b remakes, classic soul remakes, hall and oates and after seven, kelly price ad shirley murdock, lauryn hill and roberta flack, Old School Fridays, rose royce and faith evans, soul music

by vivrant thang on old school fridays

I went way overboard with this one. Just been that kind of week and I needed some good music to get me through.

This week’s theme was remakes. So many places I could have gone with this. The first artist that entered my mind was the King of Remakes, Luther Vandross. Once he remade a song, it became his. A lot of people have been surprised to know that many of their favorites were not his.

I needed some inspiration and found it here and here. I decided to weigh in on which version is my favorite. Some of my choices will probably be blasphemous. Feel free to add your two cents in the comments.

Sara Smile (Hall and Oates v After 7)
Although I LOVE After 7’s version, there’s just something about that blue-eyed soul. Besides, H&O’s version is one of my top fifty songs.)

As We Lay (Shirley Murdock v Kelly Price)
Really like Kelly’s video for this one, especially having Shirley make a cameo. However, this will ALWAYS be Shirley’s song. I really think she recorded this the second she got up out the bed with ‘Husband’)

Killing Me Softly (Roberta Flack v L Boogie)
This might draw some criticism from the few old heads that visit, but I fell in love with L Boogie’s sweet alto on this one. This became my version.

In the second video, Roberta joins the Fugees for the performance, which says a lot. Now that is the perfect combination.

Sweet Thing (Chaka Khan& Rufus v Mary J Blige)
This remains Chaka’s song…if only because she is SLAYING them in that red dress. Another off of my top fifty songs list.

Love Don’t Live Here Anymore, (Rose Royce v Faith Evans w/ Mary)
Don’t beat me down old folks but I got to go with Faith on this one. She got Mary on the joint too! Another perfect combination! Admittedly, I’m biased. Faith is one of my all-time favorite albums from start to finish.

Ain’t No Sunshine, (Bill Withers v. Michael Jackson when he was cute)
Michael’s version is so sweet. But Bill will always own this song. No one else can capture that distinctive sound. I’d like to see the Anthonys give it a try – that would be David and Hamilton)

Head on over and check out the other participants. This is a great theme this week and I KNOW you will enjoy what they come up with.
