I was going to take a week off when I saw the theme since I already covered this a few weeks ago. Besides, I am way overdue for a Side Eye of the Week post. However since I loves me a bass guitarist, I couldn’t miss out.
In saying that, I admit I know very few so I had to put my thinking cap on for this one. However, my cap is quite full with all I got going on right now (will share more in the coming weeks). Luckily, as I was checking out all the musical madness that is going on in DC and surrounding areas this summer, I came across this and my choice was clear.
Marcus Miller is a Grammy-award winning jazz artist who plays multiple instruments, including the bass. He has shared the stage with the likes of Miles Davis (nuff said), Luther, and David Sanborn. I’ve seen him perform at the Capital Jazz Fest and he’s hosting the Playboy Jazz Cruise/Festival early next year. I likes the sound of that! His 10th solo album, Marcus, was just released in March.
Power of Soul (with love to Jimi Hendrix)
Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten (Dream Team ya’ll and they are coming here!)
Check out some of his other music on his Myspace page. He’s got a rendition of Neicy Williams’ “Free” featuring Corrine Bailey Rae as well as a funky version of Robin Thicke’s “Lost Without You.” Oh yea that bass sounds nice!
The party’s not over. Check out some of the other Old School Friday participants.

That was a good one. I think my favorite bassist/guitar player would have to be Meshell N’degeocello. I have followed her career since “Dreadlocks”. I love me some Meshell. Vivrant, on July 3, I will finally get to “Experience” the magnificent wonder that is J-I-L-L-S-C-O-T-T. She will be here in Houston. Can’t wait!!!!!
i’m not up on bass guitarist. i couldn’t name anyone besides brown mark – prince and the revolution. lol.
have a great weekend, vivrant thing.
Happy OSF! I appreciate you sharing information about a brother (Marcus Miller) that I’ve never heard before…
I don’t know much about guitar solos and such. However, I do know a genius when I see one and I think that Jimi Hendrix was a genius with the guitar. That is why I chose Jimi Hendrix for this week’s OSF meme…
peace, Villager
See I never heard of Marcus Miller, so you’re teaching me something just as well.
WOW, Marcus Miller is great! Thanks for sharing this!
Have a great weekend!
I’ve never heard of Marcus Miller so thanks for the education. I’ve known about Stanley Clarke & Victor Wooten (bow down to the electric bass!) and they are some hardcore musicians. Thanks for sharing.
Didn’t know Marcus Miller before now. Great choices and thanks for the education. That dream team video was off the chain. Vic Wooten! Why didn’t I think of him for the bass solo part?
Happy OSF!!
if you get a chance, look up some old Jamiroquai songs/videos, prefarbly anything from their first 3 albums: Emergency on Planet Earth, The Return of the Space Cowboy, and Travelling Without Moving. Their original bass player, Stuart Zender is a monster
Vivrant Thing, long time no see. LOL. I imagine how busy you are.
Hello, I love Marcus Miller Music, and I took some pictures in a concert in Vitoria (Spain), more or less in 2006. A friend painter, Luisa Fuster, ask me for a picture of Marcus Miller, and make in a big canvas a copy of my picture. It’s amazing for me to see a picture of the canvas of Luisa Fuster (you can see on the upper side a square sign with an “L”and an “F” together, in red.) in the first picture in this tag posted by Vivrant Thing. I’d like to know, if you remember how did you get this picture, that comes from Valencia (Spain).
Thank you
