by vivrant thang on feeding the music jones

omar_fg_yaz1.jpg

This review is LONG overdue. I attended this show over SuperBowl weekend but some technical difficulties kept me from uploading the video…namely that I have lost 95% of the 150 or so videos I have posted on my You Tube channel. I think I’m still in shock.  Please pray for me.

Seriously.

Moving on.

It’s nothing but a thing for me to hop in the car and hit the road for a good show. My motto is “have good music, will travel.” So when I heard British soul singer Omar was going to be in the States, within driving distance, I was there!

I first experienced Omar in Philly back in 2006. What an introduction to his music! He turned World Cafe Live out with quite a high energy performance. I pledged to collect his music and catch him live whenever I could. Having Fertile Ground on the ticket was icing on the cake. I’ve never seen them perform outside of the DC Metro area.

Another reason I like attending shows outside of DC is because our music venues leave a lot to be desired. Almost every city I’ve traveled to for a show has put the 930 Club and Black Cat to shame. The Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh was no exception. It was very spacious with levels of staggered standing/sitting room. There was plenty of floor space in front of the large stage for those that wanted to get up close and personal. DC, you’ve got to do better.

On to the show. This will be briefer than my normal review because I’m cutting the carbs this week and am already meaner than Mister in Color Purple.

blackstaryahcd.jpg

Yazarah (as Purple St James) opened the show. I was a little ambivalent about her performance because the last time I saw her a couple of years ago or so, I was not impressed. Her performance was all over the place. However when she took the stage in Raleigh, looking as classy as she want to be, I knew Miss Yazarah had made some changes. She looked great and sounded even better – particularly on her slower songs.

Blackstar

She gets a little operatic on Same Page

I really like the changes Yazarah has made in her show. She’s grown as an artist since I last saw her and the crowd was very appreciative. She definitely has a new fan here.

fertileground_bi.jpg

Fertile Ground was up next and they truly turned Raleigh out. I’m not sure how many people had heard of them down there. A couple of years ago, my BFF from Charlotte was in town and attended a show with me. She hadn’t heard of them and became an instant fan. It’s hard not to be mesmerized by the lovely Navasha Daya and the way she performs, bringing the songs to life.

Live in the Light
(Sorry for the sea sickness. I must upgrade my camera to one where I can shake my moneymaker while filming)

On Homage (Yesterday),they took it back to 1997 when it was just Navasha, her husband, James, and the drummer. I’ve never seen James, feel it like this. I don’t think this video truly captured it.

sing_ukcover2.jpg

By this time, the crowd was warmed up and more than ready for Omar to take the stage. For those that are late to the party, he’s been in the game for more than 15 years. He counts Stevie Wonder as one of his fans, even getting the 8th Wonder of the World to join him on “Feeling You,” from his 2006 release, Sing If You Want It.

This performance was definitely more low-key than the one in Philly, but he still sounded great.

Here are some of my favorite songs:

Ghana Emotion

Nothing Like This

It’s So
(my favorite song from Sing If You Want It – as you’ll be able to tell)

Cover of William Devaughn’s
“Be Thankful For What You Got”

Overall,  definitely worth the trip, particularly since Omar’s tour schedule doesn’t bring him back in the States anytime soon.

Speaking of London, how I wish I could just jet over to Jazz Cafe. Some of their upcoming shows are ridiculous. Unfortunately, my musical adventures don’t take me quite that far…yet.

Blow Your Mind: A Review of Teedra Moses in Concert

It’s been almost a month since this concert, but life comes at you fast. Besides, I had a little ranting and edumucating to do before I could get back to the music. Never fear. I’ll always come back to the music.

I have to credit Butta with first introducing me to Teedra some two years ago. On a couple of occasions, I was consulting the expert on must-have albums I needed to have in my collection. She always put Teedra’s 2004 release, Complex Simplicity on her list of favorite albums. I downloaded some songs and gave them a listen, but was more excited about seeing her perform live . That’s when an artist truly cements their place in my heart. Leave the stage in flames and you’ll have a fan here for life.

I missed her when she came to the area last year. So when I heard she was coming back and that Eric Roberson was opening, I was all over it.

Ya’ll already know how I feel about the Erro concert experience. He never disappoints. He rocked with us for well over an hour, well beyond what you would expect from an opening act! The man loves the music and performing for the fans. I believe with a case of Gatorade up there, he could stay all night.

Of course I got some video.

New music from an upcoming album that I hope we’ll see sometime this year:

Head To Toe

At most shows, Erro takes random words thrown out by the crowd and freestyles on the spot…and the song actually makes sense! Plain and simple, that is pure talent because most times the words are extremely random.

Freestyle

By the time Teedra took the stage, the natives were restless, to say the least. One thing I can say is that Teedra has a strong fan base. They adore her and I think a fight would break out if anybody said anything bad about Miss Moses!

For her female fans, her songs have that relatable quality. You can identify with what she’s going through because you’ve been there and done that ghetto love thang.

It’s sassy and in your face, while still being classy. On You Better Tell Her, she lets her man know, “You better get that bitch told tonight!” After all, she’s wifey and it’s her name on the accounts.

For the men, you got this pretty, ride-or-die chick that keeps it gangsta but can easily flip it and get sultry and sexy, letting the man know she just wants to be with him.

Be Your Girl

Backstroke

As you’ll notice, the crowd knows each and every word to all of her songs. At times, you could barely hear her. I can imagine that’s got to feel good to an artist to have fans that have let their tapes rock til their tapes popped – and know all the words to your songs.

Despite how big she may one day become, she is always going to have that homegirl quality about her. I think you’ll always be able to imagine kicking it with her like regular folks. Check out her blog entry from last July when she announced that her album wouldn’t be out until this year.

Hey yall. Just letting you know that my album is not coming out this year. It has been push to the top of next year. Not my decision but I ain’t mad. It is what it is. I really am ready for yall to hear it though!!! I wish I could invite all of yall to my house. We’d have cocktails. I would cook yall some really good down home cajun dish. (You know New Orleans redbones are raised to show talent in the bedroom and the kitchen…. yada mean!) Me and The Black Moses Group (my band) could rock out in the backyard. Afterward we could get on some layed back sexy shit in my living room and listen to the The Young Lioness roar. Its funny, industry people think every artist hates their label, but in my case their wrong. I don’t hate nobody. I just don’t quite understand their logic. But don’t cry for me Argentina. I’m soooo Goood!! I don’t put my faith in a label my faith is in God, who reminds to have faith in myself and my team. God has a plan for me so no weapons formed against me will ever prosper. Its taken me a while to humbly accept it, but I am truly blessed with a talent from God. The world didn’t give it and damn sho can’t take it away. Thank yall for staying down so long, waiting so patiently and supporting so consistant and diligently.Showing up to everyshow packing the house singing loud and having fun with me. Telling all ya folks about me and always making me feel relevant in a musical climate that has forgotten the value of an artist that still makes music out of a love for it. I love yall for soooo many reasons. 1 reason is for the way you relate to me and just accept me for being myself and so many other reasons. Just so yall know, in 2008 I’m gunning for world recognition. Yall know i ain’t no superstar and never will be but Hot Dammit! I’m a natural born ROCKSTAR!!!!! and simply put I think the world should have a chance to witness a Young Lioness.

I think so too, Teedra.

The only criticism I have is that her headliner sets are way too short. It paled in comparison to Erro, who was opening for her! Seems like it should have been switched. I understand the same thing happened the last time she performed in DC. I heard several fans complaining about the price of the tickets in comparison to the show they got. They were there to rock with Teedra til the break of dawn! There were several songs she didn’t do and I felt she could have done some material from her upcoming maybe never coming release, The Young Lioness. Her fans are chomping at the bit and she left them wanting. That’s not always good.

Fortunately for her, someone was there to save the day. The crowd she attracts is similar to Raheem Devaughn’s and so it was no surprise that he showed up and did a number at the end of the show.

Prototype

What I appreciate about artists like Teedra, besides her talent and stage presence, is the fact that she is so appreciative of her fans. She was very humble and sincere in thanking us for supporting her and loving her music.

On another note, although Teedra is not an independent artist, her humble spirit reminds me of why I will always support independent music. These artists are still hungry and are grateful for the people that are buying the tickets to the shows and dropping the money for their albums.

Despite the brevity of her performances, Teedra has something special and I’ll always support her music and her live performances.

Sharon, I Got a Jones for You! : A Concert Review

25 Friday Jan 2008

100 days 100 nights, amy winehouse, daptone records, sharon jones, sharon jones and the dap kings

sharon2.jpg

Ya’ll should know by now that I’m a lover, not a fighter. Not because I’m all sensitive and shit. I am afraid that if I actually get into a fight, I will end up seriously maiming or killing someone. Seriously. So it’s taken me a week to recover my sensibilities enough to write this review – as I have never attended a show where I literally almost caught two cases and had to be rescued by an artist in the midst of a performance!

Before I get to the drama, let me focus on the music because that’s what’s important here. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are nothing to play with. This is true grown folks music. This music harkens back to a period when lyrics were saying something. Back to the days when our parents were grinding under that blue light during those basement house parties. The Evans clan would probably have thrown on music like this during a rent party for a down-on-their luck neighbor.  This is the ‘music’ that Leela James and the Brand New Heavies yearn for. Let’s go back to the days…indeed.

From the moment the Dap-Kings took the stage to get things warmed up, I knew we were in for a funky good time. I think you’ll agree.

dap_kings.jpg

New music, “One Time”

That Binky Griptite is one cool cat.

Before she even took the stage, we felt Sharon’s presence.

sharon_jones_shoes.jpg

They say you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes. Those shoes let me that she was about to take that stage, kicking ass and taking names! Hell no, Amy CrackWinehouse ain’t got nothing on her. If this industry made sense, their names wouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence.  I’ve seen Amy sing and while her voice is amazing, she doesn’t perform. It’s like watching the polish dry on my toes. She doesn’t command the stage like Sharon does. She connected with each and every member of that audience (especially me, but we’ll get back to that later). That’s not a skill many artists master. I certainly hope  now that Amy has said “yes, yes, yes” to rehab, she’ll come out of her crack-induced walking slumber and really get back to the business of music.  Because we need more artists reminding us of how it used to be and can still be if we support this kind of music. Meantime Amy, Sharon got this.

sharonjones.jpg

Not Gonna Cry

Check out those moves and the crowd reaction. They love her.

How Do I Keep A Good Man Down (Claudehamercy!)

I love how Sharon engages the audience and even when they get foolish with their antics, she still commands her stage. All eyes are still on her, even as she makes them feel like they are the star for that moment they are up there.

Keep On Looking

Tell Me (one of my faves)

As you can see from some of the videos here and over on my YouTube channel, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings draw a very diverse crowd. Because of the music I like, the crowd tends to mostly be my people…or your people, depending on how they acting because I don’t claim them everyday (this means you, Kwame Kilpatrick and your “Negro Nonsense”). I don’t think I’ve ever been to a show at a spot like the Black Cat where I was rocking with white men of Social Security-collecting age. This was a new one on your girl.

Anyhow, I’ve been joking for the longest that I need to diversify my friendship portfolio a bit and get some white friends. My black female co-worker has white friends whose parents have beach houses. They got tickets to the games. Become one of the family and you might get a piece of that. However, by the end of the show I had completely changed my mind.

Some white folks do not know how to handle their liquor.  I knew this, but it had never affected me before. The venue makes some extremely strong drinks. I’m a drinker and I’m one and done there for the most part. They don’t know nothing about one and done. So these folks were lit by the time the show started. And of course, they get real happy and want to dance and carry on and they have no regard for who is around them. They feel like you should be lit right along with them. Party on dude!

I vote no.

So that was the beginning of my rough night. They were “dancing” wildly and bumping into me to the point that I was being shoved into the person next to me…while I was holding my precious camera. Remember, I’m a lover not a fighter so I tried several approaches before I completely lost it and and pushed back…harder. They were too drunk to really notice.

Once things had calmed down a bit, I felt another shoving match begin. I’m in the very front and getting shoved against the stage. I turn around to see this crass little number complaining that she couldn’t see and trying to force her way to the front by pushing against anybody ahead of her. By this time, like Latifah, I had it up to here and she was about to catch a bad one. I let her know as much and of course she starts to pop off at the mouth. I glanced up at the stage, as I knew the situation was disrupting the show. Binky Griptite shook his head and gave me a “let it go” look.

Sharon Jones to the rescueeeee!

She comes over and pulls the chick on the stage with her, telling her she can’t be doing all that pushing and shoving. Sharon knew me against her would have been as simple as me stomping on a pesky roach. And yes, this chick was black…ya’ll can claim that mess.

Nobody’s Baby

So after all I had been through, I was trying to just get through the rest of show without conflict. I was capturing 100 Days, 100 Nights when I felt someone grip my shoulder rather roughly. I didn’t turn around at first because I’m serious about my video. DON’T interrupt me. The tugging became more insistent but the crew around me was also getting wild again so I wasn’t sure what it was. I didn’t turn around at first. When I did, briefly, it was one of the staff commanding me to stop taping.

WTF?

Mind you, I had been standing in front of the stage taping practically every song. This was my fifty eleventh time at the Black Cat, where I always record just about every song. There was no sign prohibiting video. There never is. This same man had actually come around before the show started and told us no flash photography, which I had complied with. I admit I was probably in the wrong, but I ignored him. The song was ending and I was not to be cut off in the middle, particularly since this whole thing didn’t make sense and there were other people recording.

He kept tugging on my shoulder for the next few seconds, finally telling me to come with him. I was not moving. I told him it was not happening. I had paid for my ticket and there was no signage that indicated I couldn’t record. I had been recording the whole show and I wasn’t new to the Black Cat experience. He didn’t care and kept commanding me to come with him or I would be “thrown out.” At this point, I figured out that someone had complained to him and he was moving me from the front. I was not having it. I told him I wasn’t going anywhere, as I felt that familiar rage building inside of me. I was literally two seconds off his ass. Seriously.

I have a history of sassing white men. Once, I roughly shoved a man who pushed me aside to get his luggage from the carousel at the airport. We hadn’t said a word to each other. He pushed, I pushed back…harder. Sorry, I exist.  Had he complained, I would likely have ended up like Miss Sophia, sitting up in DC jail damn near bout to rot to death. So I turned away from the Black Cat errand boy to get my composure and there she was again.

Sharon Jones to the rescueeee!

She was trying to perform and had to save me from “The Man.” Thankfully, he disappeared.

Despite my harrowing experience, which marred my enjoyment of the show slightly, I will never miss Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings when they come to town. I will have to meditate all day before I go, but I can’t stay away. I got a jones for Miss Jones and those Dap Kings are the truth. I look forward to all the beautiful music they’ll make together.

Let’s Rock : From Erro to Prince, I Gets Around!

07 Monday Jan 2008

by vivrant thang on feeding the music jones and let’s rock

As you can see from my concert calendar, the year has been off to a great start musically.

New Years Day Butta and I took our clown act on the road to rock with Eric Roberson up in Philly at one of my favorite venues, World Cafe Live. It was a seated show, which was a little different flavor for us. However, we rolled with it.

There was an opening act, but I’m not even going to waste my cyberbreath on that mess.  I’ll let you see it and weep.

I’ve already told you how Erro gets down. I was able to capture video of him performing some of his older music:

Couldn’t Hear Me Over The Music

Only For You

Curt is sick on that guitar, I tell you.

Part of what makes an Erro show so enjoyable is the fact that he must have been an actor in a former life. He’s not just a talented singer. He’s a true performer, an entertainer who truly connects with his audience. Basically, you can count on him to cut a fool at some point in the show. Check out his advice to the single brothers on how to “close the deal,” a bit a he usually does preceding what he calls, the “sexy part of the show.”

Although Erro was great and all, the highlight of the whole trip was seeing Jill Scott hanging out in the crowd after the show like she’s not the hottest selling ticket out there right now. She was rolling so low key that Butta didn’t immediately recognize her until she flashed that sunny Colgate smile. I would stan for her too but shiiit, like I told you she’s a hot ticket and until I get a sponsor, I’m not gonna be able to do it.

jilly_chillin.jpg

There are other pics under the link, courtesy of Butta, but I love this one. Check out ole boy in the background. He got love all in his eyes for Jill. I feel ya, homie!

Anyhow, Erro and Curt came down the road a few days later for the rescheduled Tribute to Prince’s Sign O The Times and Parade.

princetribute.jpg

I was excited about this show and it did not disappoint, despite what some buffoons may say. I captured just about every performance over at the spot. Here are a few of the highlights.

The lovely Navasha Daya of Fertile Ground almost started a “Housequake” at the club!

Memo to Curt Chambers of Franklin Bridge : If I got knocked up after the show because of your orgasmic performance of “U Got The Look“, you better have five on the Similac!

Now, any Raheem Devaughn stans might to click the little x in the top right corner because I got a major bone to pick with him. You know I got love for Rah. I mean “Woman” rated pretty high on my Top 10 list. I had even forgiven him for his previous Patti Labelle-ish antics. However, he has put our love affair in SERIOUS jeopardy by not knowing the words to my favorite Prince song ever, “Adore. “

Let me give you a minute because I know you’re just as upset about this as I am.

There’s more.

He also didn’t know the words to “Kiss.”

Blasphemy.

Not to mention, how you gonna show up and do a tribute to an icon like His Purple Royalness and not know the words to two of his most famous songs? Even if he was a last minute addition, everyone should know the words to these two songs, particularly if you’re going to be performing them.

That’s all I can say about this one because I’m spent just reliving the whole thing. Here’s the video evidence of this travesty. If Prince should happen to grace a Grammy party with his presence and run into Raheem, I hope he bitch slaps him.

Adore

Kiss

Next up on the concert scene: Reports from Martin Luther’s acoustic set, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and Teedra Moses.

My Favorite Things : Top Five Concerts I Attended in 2007

30 Sunday Dec 2007

bilal, hip hop honors tour, jill scott, reggae sumfest, top five concerts of 2007

by vivrant thang on my favorite things

luthervandrossxmas1.jpg

When the dog bites, when the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I just simply remember my favorite things
and then I don’t feel so bad.

2007 has been a fantastic year for me musically. One of my New Years Resolutions was to attend one concert a month – and that’s actually one that I kept!

I already mentioned some of the artists I’ve been blessed to see over the past year and I’ve shared video from my musical adventures under the Feeding The Music Jones and Let’s Rock categories.

Don’t have time to peruse those lists? As hard as it was, I chose the top five.

5. Xplosion Dancehall night at Reggae Sumfest – Montego Bay, Jamaica

It was my first trip to Jamaica and I still don’t think I’ve recovered from all the second-hand ganga smoke I ingested or from staying up until 6am with those wild and crazy locals. I loved every minute of it.  This particular night featured artists like Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Movado, Lady Saw and Vegas. If you ever make it there, I warn you, it’s not for the faint of heart. They call it “jump-up” night for a reason!

4. Bailey’s Get Together with Jill Scott –  Ram’s Head Tavern – Baltimore, MD

jill.jpg

Jill is currently on tour promoting The Real Thing and I’ll be attending the show in Philly. However, I was fortunate enough to get a sneak preview at a private show – for FREE! This was a show I would have gladly payed full ticket price for. She preformed practically every song from Real Thing and gave us some of the old as well, including “Lyzel in E Flat.”  I swear she sang that song better than she ever has. Gave me chills. I hope you catch Jill when she comes to a venue near you.

Here’s some video of her encore that Lady Butta captured. They actually posted it on Jill’s official website!

3. Bilal – World Cafe Live, Philadelphia

You should already know that I stalk this man up and down the East Coast. I’ve seen him four times this year alone. The Philly show was by far the best of the four. He was home. Of course he was going to show out.

2. Hip Hop Honors Tour featuring Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, and The Roots f/Skillz  – Rams Head Live, Baltimore

It’s not often that I do a hip-hop show because well, there are very few rappers these days that I would dig into the bosom account and pay money to see. But THIS show was for those of us who remember letting our tapes rock til our tapes popped. Those of us who know what an MC is. I still knew all the lyrics to every song that MC Lyte and Big Daddy Kane performed. I fell back in love with the “Smooth Operator” that night! Not to mention, it was great to witness the respect that Black Thought and Skillz have for the artistry of hip-hop and those that kicked open the doors for them.

Much more video from this HOT show, including performances from my all time favorite female MC – MC Lyte – on my Youtube channel, starting on page 8

1. Prince performing at Club 3121 in Vegas

I literally almost passed out as soon as he came out on that stage. Now I understand why people used to fall out at those Micheal Jackson shows. The club is simply gorgeous and the atmosphere was electric. Being in that intimate setting in that close proximity to His Purple Royalness….nuff said. There is no experience that could eva surpass this one.

Honorable Mentions:
Capital Jazzfest – Brand New Heavies
Chrisette Michele – Black Cat, Washington DC
Eric Roberson – Eden’s Lounge, Baltimore

So there you have it. As you can see from my concert calendar, it’s on in 2008 as well.
