Update: The press conference went down in NYC yesterday and Butta of SoulBounce was front and center. Check out her flicks from the event.

Get ready to send some hateration and holleration her way because yes, she did meet him up close and personal!

Of course you know she has live video. Check it out!

On Saturday afternoon, while most everyone was out playing in the sunshine, very quietly, without pretense, Maxwell tweeted what appears to be the tracklist for his upcoming album, Black Summer’s Night. You should already know it will be in stores on July 7th. But I, my friends, shall be getting a sneak peek at the Essence Music Festival. Hate on haters! 🙂

According to his tweets, on Friday,  he was headed to master the album. Then the next day he just randomly tweeted several titles in a row. I was confused until I saw “Pretty Wings.” It had to be the track list!

  1. Phoenix Rise
  2. Playing Possum
  3. Help Somebody
  4. Fistful of Tears
  5. Stop the World
  6. Love You
  7. Pretty Wings
  8. Cold
  9. Bad Habits

TOO Short and sweet, yet intriguing!

For those skeptical susies out there, I can confirm without a shadow of a doubt that it really is Maxwell tweeting. Can’t say how but Viv wouldn’t steer you wrong.

So it looks like we may be able to give our collective side eyes a much-needed rest. I think it will really happen this time. Looks like we will have a lot of little Maxie’s, Baracks, Michelles, Sashas and Malias making their debuts April 2010!

Stay tuned to SoulBounce (Did they catch swine flu on Spring Break or something? Nova does have a love jones for bacon. Just sayin.) to eventually get up close and personal coverage of the press conference for the album going down at Sony tomorrow.

Also, the video for “Pretty Wings” is completed and will be streamed here.

Note: I can’t confirm that this is the order the tracks will appear on the album. I’m just listing in the order he tweeted. I personally don’t care if  it went  B, C, A, F, D. Just as long as I see something on July 7th. Mmkay?

A day late, but not short on great content.

Here is what I found while perusing the musical blogosphere this week.

Add these blogs to your feeds. Leave a comment. Support real music.

  • This is the remix! Some of you weren’t feeling the Chrisette Michele single, “Ephiphany” on first listen. Maybe you’ll like the remix featuring Rick Ross and Juelz Santana better? [via Pinboard]
  • Lisa Shaw’s new album Free has been in heavy rotation on the pod. Watch her video for “Tomorrow” and download “Can You See Him” for free.99. [via Beatlife]
  • Can’t get enough of Lisa Shaw? Check out her interview with Nu-Soul Magazine.
  • “Might Not Be” from the upcoming album, 4:15, is hot like Ayah indeed. Give it a listen and let her know what you think. Summer soundtrack anyone? [via Soul Bounce]
  • Happy 70th Birthday Marvin Gaye. [via Adventures of an Audio Diva]

Very exciting news on the album release front!

My girl crush and hair idol, N’Dambi, recorded a brief video giving us the name and release date for her new album.

Mark your calendars. Pink Elephant will be in stores on August 25th.

Meanwhile, you can follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and her You Tube channel for updates.

blog roundups, good soul music sites

Here’s what caught my eye around the blogosphere this week.

  • Bilal + The Roots = Backdoor Man FTW!
  • From SXSW: Common +Erykah Badu + Kanye = The Light FTMFW!
  • Speaking of Common, I never thought I would love a version of “Come Close” more than the original. Ill Mami of SoulBounce changed my mind on that! Check out Common reimagined.
  • Ever wonder who is responsible for creating the playlists that keep the first family collective heads nodding while they are on Air Force One?
  • Choklate is back. Read the interview. Listen to the new tracks. <—-hotness
  • Do you have as much disdain for Chrisette Michele’s album cover as I do? Photoshop natzis!
  • New music for your listening pleasure or displeasure by Monica, Ne’a Posey, Antonio Vitale/Tamara Wellons, and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
  • Very soon, I plan to spend a significant amount of time digging in the dusty crates and really studying some of the classics. You have to look back sometimes to really move forward. Podcasts from TGrundy and EJ Flavors will be among my first stops. I also plan to get my hands on an album that’s been out since early February, Leon Ware and Friends.
  • Speaking of podcasts, be sure to check out the latest edition of Friday Favecast where Ill Mami waxes poetic about relationships. Another newly discovered site with great podcasts is GroovyEclectic. You know…for whenever your iPod gets bored.

Esperanza Spalding and Ayo Tell City Stories for Banana Republic

I’m dealing with a major case of wanderlust so news of this project was the perfect fuel for my escapism.

Ayo and Esperanza Spalding are a taking part in Banana Republic’s Spring “City Stories” Campaign, a collection of mini documentaries that combine elements of city life – the music, culture and fashion. Filmed against gorgeous New York City and Brooklyn backdrops, these pieces capture the artists talking about their love for the city and how it influences and inspires their art. They also perform while donned in pieces and accents from the casually chic Banana Republic spring collection

ayo

Ayo is a Nigerian-German singer-songwriter who has long been on my radar. I’m glad she’s apart of this campaign because it puts her music back in my mind and hopefully yours as well. She has quite an interesting background and calls both Paris and New York home, which she talks about in her documentary. Her entire first album, Joyful, was recorded live in New York in 2006 in just five days. Her sophomore effort, Gravity at Last, was released last year.

esperanza2

I have been taken with Esperanza Spalding since her live performance last summer at The Roots Picnic. Taking the stage on that on that unreasonably hot day , the super talented little lady with the soaring voice, big fro and even bigger bass was cool as a fan. I love the way she describes her love for New York in all it’s ” conscious fearlessness.” The irony is just today I was contemplating how to move there for a short time. I grew up minutes from the city and even though my grown teen-aged behind experienced more there than I should have, adult Viv needs more.

I’ll experience a taste in May during a weekend trip. Until then, I’ll have to live vicarously through Esperanza and Ayo. How simply beautiful are these two?

These pieces, along with stories from an eclectic group of other artists, will be shown as in flight entertainment on Virgin America. Not taking a flight anytime soon? Head on over to the City Stories website where you can also see the documentaries as well as unplugged performances, streaming audio, and free music downloads.

As always, support these artists and real music.
