album releases in 2009, albums coming out in 2009, erykah badu, heather headley album releases, highly anticipated albums in 2009, india arie, syleena johnson, tortured soul, what r and b albums are coming out in 2009
You’ll remember at the end of my post on albums I was anticipating in 2008, I stated that I would start keeping vigil for albums from certain artist the second 2009 rolled in.
Light a candle and let the vigil begin!
We had a plethora of good music last year, particularly in the last half of the year. 2009 promises to deliver some very heavy hitters. However, promises is the key word. Music lovers, that’s why we have to use our collective energy and wish upon a star that these albums see the light of day.
Let’s start off with a list of albums that I’m anticipating that actually have release dates….whatever that means.

- 13 – Syleena Johnson, Labor Pains (already available on Itunes)

- 30–Chico Debarge-Addiction
July

August
- 25 – N’dambi, Pink Elephant
Now there are some artists that have promised to deliver albums this year. No release dates yet of course. So we can only hope they made New Years resolutions to keep their butts in the studio 24/7 until the final track is done.
- Prince We’re supposed to get THREE albums this year from everyone’s favorite joy kill. We shall see. Stay tuned to his new official website and the internets for details. Update: (We got three albums, but only one of them was worth listening to. Sigh.
- Erykah Badu (I’ve seen dates of 2/17 floating around but since I’m her close personal friend on Twitter, I seriously think she would have let me know. However, I do feel confident that we will get New Amerykah Pt 2 after the bambino drops. And hopefully another tour!)
- Eric Roberson (I hear that he has fifty tracks already completed. Let’s get with the getting!)
- D’Angelo (I will want to shut this whole shit down if we don’t get this album by year’s end)
Glad I was smart enough to say I would want to shut it down because I hear we’re not going to see the album until 2010.
- Deborah Bond
- Yazarah (After the Prelude she gave us, I need for her to hurry up this way again)
I won’t likely purchase these three but I will give them a listen.
- Dr. Dre, Detox
- Jay Z, Blueprint 3
- Eminem, Relapse
I was scrolling through my iPod today and came up with a wish list for the artists that I hope, wish and pray are preparing to step back in front of the mic. Some of the people on this list I could have put on a separate “where are they now” post. If you’ve heard anything about when any of them will get back in the studio, please let me know in the comments.
- Amel Larrieux (The standards album was cool and all but I’m going to need something else from her) Update: She’s been releasing a track a month, available for download on Amazon and iTunes.
- Amerie (I got my hands on the unreleased album. Let’s see if it ever sees the light of day) Now that she’s on Def Jam, her fate, or better yet, the fate of a palatable album lies in the hands of the music gods.
- Angela Johnson (“Presenting” others is cool but I want the next album to be all Angela)
- Anthony David (I need NEW music from you, Acey Ducey)
- Brand New Heavies (I know we got something in 2007 but I’m greedy!)
- Brown Baby Girl
- Corrine Bailey Rae
- D’Nell
- Darien Brockington (I hope he stops traipsing around with Little Brother and gets his own album done!)
- Faith (The way to feed your family is with that voice. Quit the foolishness and pick the mic up!)
- Fertile Ground
- Georgia Ann Muldrow
- Goapele
- Jaguar Wright
- Javier
- Jazzyfatnastees (I got my hands on some unreleased music that I assume was from their third album, The World Is Coming. Good stuff. Needs to be heard.)
- Joy Denalane (She was great on the Dresden Soul Symphony album. Let’s get on that solo material!)
- Keite Young
- Lizz Fields
- Liv Warfield
- Marie Tweek
- Omar
- Peven Everett
- Ra-Re Valverde
- Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
- The Rebirth
- Stephanie McKay
- Teedra Moses (Will Young Lioness ever see the light of day?)
- Van Hunt (after Popular was shelved, will a new album ever see the light of day?)
If you’re not familiar with any of these artists, consider this my ringing endorsement to get acquainted with their earlier projects until we get new music.
Share what albums you’re most looking forward to this year. Who needs to get their hindparts back in the studio ASAP?
I’ll be keeping this list updated so check back.
Sis, that’s a long list you got there! I’m pretty sure you will obtain most of it this year though.
As far as albums I’m anticipating, hell you pretty much covered everything.
The only thing that you don’t have here that I am going to be keeping a eye out for is Charles Hamilton’s Interscope debut.
Oh, that and what you were talking about today on Twitter regarding Bilal and him needing to drop a new LP also.
Even if he just “officially” dropped “A Love 4 Sale” at least it would be something.
Oh and you WILL have to tell me how you formatted that GIF and placed it right there that way..
Later,
You hit all the ones I’m waiting on and then some. This is a great list. GREAT music! Yaaay!
As i suspected you have covered just about everything! Top of my must have list are India, Yahzarah, Chrisette and EB!
I’ve heard (but for the life of me i can’t remember where… myspace??) that Ra-Re is dropping another album mid-late 2009. Jaguar Wright seems to have gone on the missing list, hers was the 2nd album i purchased when i joined the soul/neo-soul train and i REALLY need to hear some new stuff! Oh, as always Bilal would be nice but…..
The only other’s i’m anticipating that you havn’t already mentioned are Tawiah’s full length debut (PLEASE be early 2009 lol) and Laura Izibor’s album.
I just got Syleena Johnson’s new album Chapter 4: Labor Pains from itunes and its off the chain! Support R&B’s Best Kept Secret and cop that album!
Please support Syleena Johnson and be among the first to download Chapter 4: Labor Pains. Now you can purchase the exclusive early digital release at iTunes.
Link up to iTunes today:
Please share your thoughts and encourage your friends to buy her new release.
Chapter 4: Labor Pains
All I can say is, “You’re the greatest”. You just went from being my friend in my head to being my sister in my head.
I wish Me’shell N’dgeocello would drop something, too. It’s time for some more Bilal, as well.
Sorry! Last time! But we can’t forget about Joi, either.
this is awesome. thank you for sharing. and yeah.. let’s hope d’angelo get’s something out or else they’ll shut this shit down = no good.
I so CAN.NOT. get into this right now. I was just passing through!! However I will say this – I concur on the D’Angelo and Maxwell part.
Will return after these messages…
Darn! I wrote a response and there was an error and it disappeared. 😦 Now I don’t remember what I said. Here is the gist of it…. Very conclusive list you have here! I’m anxiously awaiting many of the albums listed here (especially ERRO’s, Yazahrah’s, Badu’s and Maxwell’s) and would love something new from many of those in your wish list. I also echo imsofamous comment and think that something new from the Star Kitty Joi would be AWESOME (I read on her facebook page that she is working on a concept and etc for a new album…let’s keep our fingers crossed that it comes quickly). Something new from Ledisi would be divine! Oh, I know many people loved Saadiq’s 60’s themed cd but I would LOVE to see Instant Vintage Pt II. If I think of anything else I’ll be back. 🙂
How you forgot about Mos Def’s the Ecstatic? The title track is CRAAAZY sick!
There are so many gems here on your list. SYLEENA JOHNSON!!! Her album is off the chain…a must have. I’m looking forward to Tweet. And Joy Denalane is the truth. I have her Born & Raised album. Her German albums are good too (gotta pay for importing, but she’s worth it). But Syleena Johnson really has my muse right now.
Very, very nice list. We’re anticipating some of the same albums. I am completely ready for New Amerykah Part II. I want it like…next month. But I doubt that will happen since she hasn’t even released a single. I miss my Teedra and I NEED my Chrisette Michele. When she releases her first single for her upcoming album I will LOSE. MY. MIND.
I’m just patiently waiting for D’Angelo’s….no rush…
On the hip-hop side of this music world, I cannot wait for Common’s “The Believer” (If it’s still going to be released this year). UMC was a HUGE disappointment so I want this next album to be on some real hip-hop shit.
I have family that will fall out if Maxwell comes back this year! Gotta admit I’ve been waiting on some new stuff of his for a minute myself.
But really though, I am dying to get some new Teedra Moses and Joy Denalane. And I will knock people down to get some new Faith. Oh, how I love that woman’s voice; I just wish she would get some really good material to go with it!
This is one kick ass list!!! I hope Erykah drops that album soon, I am so ready for part two!
I love the Rebirth but since Noelle Scaggs left the group, I am nervous that the next release will not be as hot.
I would die if I got a something new from the Jazzyfatnastees. Lucky you. Wait, I just found it on line, download in process.
Good stuff!!!

Be Blessed{you and yours}

Looks like you may get your wish regarding AD. I know you don’t visit myspace as much anymore but he posted a blog today with some “album idears” as he put it (love how he adds the country to it…lol). Maybe we will get something in ’09 or early 2010. *fingers crossed*

WOW so I’m pretty much in sync with your comments here, and as for Maxwell…saw him in concert and am anticipating his album like the single features Jesus
First time commenting. Love your site Vivrant!!!
I really try not to think about how much I want Maxwell’s cd to drop.
It’s funny to me that D’ Angelo who has been in a car wreck, been on/off drugs; gained/lost 200 or so pounds; been arrested; and God knows what else…might actually get an album out before Maxwell who, by his own admission, has spent the last 7 years being a “regular person”. Oh the irony!!!
But like I said, I try not to think about these things.
