by vivrant thang on rock the bells concert review

I already told you about the night I fell back in love with hip hop. Well the love affair got that much stronger this past Sunday at the all-day Rock The Bells Festival aka the “Hip Hop Woodstock.” Hands down, this was the best show hip hop concert I’ve been to and that’s saying a lot.

I’m not the only one that felt that way. I belong to a hip-hop meetup group and a lot of members who have been been to way more hip hop shows than I have felt the same way. It wasn’t just the line-up, which I will get to in a minute, but the overall good feelings that abound from being in the presence of real emcees who know how to move the crowd.

I was very impressed with how well the show was run. I have no idea how chaotic is was backstage but you couldn’t tell from where we sat. They kept to the posted schedule and we were never waiting very long between acts.

The crowd, which was extremely diverse (read: I see white people), was quite the feel-good bunch. They just wanted to spark up their L’s (subjecting me to a hell of a contact high but whatever…) and party on down to some real hip-hop. I didn’t see or hear of any situations – although I almost started one when these chicks spilled their margarita on my stuff. However, my murderous angry black woman glare was punishment enough. You know I got a history of almost having to throw dem bows with white folks.

As you’ll see in the videos, I had lawn seats which is what I prefer for a show of this length – over 10 hours. I was out there with my feet up feasting on fried chicken, tomato and mozarella salad, fruit and assorted snacks. When I saw the $3 price tag on a bottle of water, I knew I had made the right decision! They were flirting with a gallon of gas with those prices!

Some people had standing room only tickets right in front of the stage and stood for the whole time. While it would have been cool to be right in front of the stage, I am still exhausted from sitting/standing for the whole day so I would have never made it. Besides the humidity was overwhelming. There were times when all I could do was sit back with my spritzing fan and pray for a breeze.

By the time I arrived, I had missed Jay Electronica’s first set but MURS was rocking the mic. I’ve heard of him because I’m a 9th Wonder fan and they have done a couple of albums together. He was nice – from the few bars I caught.

Wale is hot right now here in DC. Unlike Anita, I felt that he wasn’t “giving us the best that he got.” Frankly, I was underwhelmed. He kept telling us that he would be back later as if that was an excuse for his lazy performance. I think he mentioned that they had him going on early. Doesn’t matter. You’re hot in the game. You got to be ready to get it in at any given moment. However, I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt since some people swear by him. I was less than thrilled with Raheem Devaughn the first time I saw him and now he gets nothing but love over here. So we’ll see.

Dead Prez and Immortal Technique were up next. I can’t really comment on them because I’m not a huge fan. I had actually never heard of Immortal Technique before that day. He is nice with his – yelling talking about some real shit once you got past the harsh delivery. I’ve never been a Dead Prez fan and honestly, I don’t really remember their performance.  From what I could tell, folks may have been underwhelmed. The energy seemed kind of low up there close to the stage. Anyone know different, please feel free to comment.

Before I go any further, I have to mention the host, Supernatural. Evidentially, once again I am late to the party because he is well-known for his legendary freestyle battles. He ripped the mic to shreds. His flow was reminiscent of KRS-One and that’s saying a lot.  Don’t sleep on this dude. Hell, I’m probably the only one that wasn’t in the know. But he asked us to spread the word and I had to comply! Video evidence is coming soon. Meantime, check him out performing “3 MC’s.”

A number of DJs were on the 1s and 2s throughout the day but I was most excited to see DJ Beverly Bond representing for the ladies. Some feminine energy was most needed up there. DJ Scratch, formerly of The Roots, was ridiculous with the beatboxing. Had me reminiscing for real.

Once Rakim took the stage about 3pm, there was no more rest for the weary. I don’t think I sat down for more than 15 minutes at a time for the rest of the day. The rain came down and I ignored it. A black woman voluntarily standing out in the rain?! I must have been high. But how can you sit down when one of the greatest to ever do it is on the mic? Not to mention Raekwon & Ghostface Killah, De La Soul, Meth & Redman (with his fly ass ‘hawk), Pharcyde, Mos Def, Nas, and A Tribe Called Quest are in the building?! I can rest when I die!

Here are some random thoughts I had through the rest of the day:

Rakim is still the lyrical assassin. Few can touch him. That’s over 20 years in the game right there.

The most beautifullest thing in this world was seeing thousands of people throwing up the WU sign.

Tribute to ODB got me a little misty.

Meth and Red stage diving was the coolest. When they hugged at the end of the set, I got misty again.

Redman joining Tribe on stage was hot.

Nas telling the “old niggas” to step aside for the “new niggas” is probably disrespectful but still humorous.

Wondering why the hell Afrika Bamabaataa was on the B stage. That was a crime. Apparently there were some great artists on that stage – like Spank Rock- but a sista was not moving!

Me losing my everloving mind when Q-Tip performed “Bonita Applebaum” and “Vivrant Thing.”

Thinking that I need to get Nas’ album ASAP. And I don’t buy hip hop albums like that. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it and I was feeling the cuts he performed.

What is Bilal’s music director doing up there performing with Q-Tip?!

I liked Mos Def’s set although he was definitely on some other stuff.  “Miss Fat Booty” was not in the building. I didn’t mind because I was feeling a lot of his reggae-flavored joints. I was winding my body like I was in Jamaica mon.

I’m still downloading videos and probably will be for quite a while. I did get a few up for your viewing pleasure. They are far from my best work (i.e. you may be subject to sea sickness and random singing/rapping and commentary). If you want to see better videos closer to the stage, just search You Tube or check out the view from “Life In The Chocolate City.”

Nas, “One Mic”

Nas, “Sly Fox”

Tribe Called Quest, “Scenario” and “Award Tour”

Tribe Called Quest, “Relax Yourself” and “Check The Rhime”

Plethora

OLD SCHOOL FRIDAY IS POST BELOW

by vivrant thang on a plethora of…stuff

Plethora is one of my favorite words for some strange reason. Named the post that because I’ll just be talking about an abundance of random ish – playing a bit of catch up. It’s just been that kind of week.

Plethora is also the name of Swedish singer Kissey Asplund’s album which I had on my latest list of CDs I need in my life like yesterday. I saw her perform last weekend at BloomBars, a new community art space in DC. That’s one thing I love about living in this area – lots of random spaces and places where passionate people are creating. Check out some of the music-related pieces. I’ll have to talk about my passion for art one day and post some of the artwork I have on my walls.

I captured Kissey’s entire performance. Here’s “Fuss N Fight.” More on the YouTube channel. If you’re a Kissey fan or even if you aren’t, let me know what you think in the comments.

This weekend will be jam packed with great music. Tonight, I’ll be attending the Anthony David/N’Dambi show. Always good to see Acey Ducey and this will be my first N’Dambi experience. Videos and review to come. For Saturday, I was fortunate to receive a pair of tix to see Lyfe Jennings and Keith Sweat. It’s great being a tastemaker I tell ya! Opening for them will be a new artist on the comeup, Yolanda Renee. I like her sound and will definitely keep my eyes and ears out for more. I’ll end the weekend spending all day Sunday at Rock The Bells. Now this should be interesting. I’m most excited to seeing ATCQ (hope they do Bonita Applebaum!), Rakim, De La Soul, and members of Wu Tang. I know they won’t come on until the end so I’ll just be out there maxin and relaxin with some wine and vittles.

Also on the music front, I’m really excited to be helping out with Can A Sista Rock A Mic 2008. You already know the answer – yes they can! Stay tuned for more info on that in the coming weeks. Some of the artists I’ve mentioned here just may be up there rocking the mic.

Met with my goal-setting partner this week and really feel good about some things I’m about to put in place to move closer to doing what I love…at least as a side hustle. I can’t see myself being able to give up my weekly paycheck and free top-notch health care any time soon. I just can’t let that stop me from remembering what I was put here to do – and actually doing it. A woman at my job just dropped dead in church at 34. No one is promised tomorrow.

I had been bemoaning my lack of true female friends and trying to think of ways to expand my circle. However, the more I think about it, I think I’m better off being happy with what I got. This hasn’t been my year with females and friendship. Ya’ll are some unstable creatures for real. Maybe I need more male friends. Not that those friendships don’t come with a whole different set of issues. Who knows Just thinking out loud.

Just finished watching the “Being A Black Man in America” show on CNN. What kind of fuckery was that? Truly made me wanna holler and throw up both my hands. All that negativity truly disturbed my spirit. Somehow even the positives in this show had an undercurrent of negativity. Thank God for Twitter and my Soror Yas’ discussion forum.I recorded the women’s segment but I don’t think I will watch. Interesting comments over at What About Our Daughters? Average Bro raises some great points about personal responsibility (stop giving your cookies to idiots -*round of applause*) and actually provides some solutions – something that is always absent from these bullshit “State of Black America” discussions. Comments are sure to be lively so check him out.

On a slightly related note, apparently in the women’s segment, they mentioned that always startling statistic that 80% of all new AIDS cases in DC are Black folks. Of course we have to consider that DC is a “chocolate city” after all so there’s several ways to look at that. However, it’s still unsettling. You know HIV/AIDS is an important issue for me. I should be starting volunteer work with some area organizations within the next month so I hope to get an inside look at what that stat really means. What I do know is that there are two people I know that have permanent STDs and don’t inform their partners. That’s a whole other post/rant though. Be careful folks.

So that I don’t end on a totally morbid note, I was called “stunning” for the first time in 31 years. That’s not how I would describe myself but I just said “thank you” – just as I should have. Made me smile.

faith, faith soon as i get home, maxwell, maxwell til the cops come knocking, old school friday

by vivrant thang on old school friday

Last week we were breaking up.

Now we making up.

For some strange reason, I had a hard time coming up with “making up” songs. So I just went with two artists whose return to the music scene I am impatiently waiting for. Things just fell into place from there. Neither of these artists are “old school.” Sure seems like it though since both of them have deprived us for more than a minute.

First up, we got Faith Evans “Soon As I Get Home.” Who wouldn’t want to make up with Faye after hearing this sweet plea?

Baby if you give me just
another chance (oh baby)
I can show you love (more love)
Promise I’ll be true to you
(you don’t ever have to worry)
You don’t ever have to worry (no, no, no)
Cuz I’m gonna treat you right (baby I miss you)
Baby I miss you just want to kiss you
Hold you in my arms

And you know the best part of making up, right?

Gotta do the damn thing, “‘Til The Cops Come Knockin!”

*fans self*

Sorry ya’ll. That song is…QUITE special to a sista.

Hope you enjoyed my picks today. Hell, I know I did.

Be sure to check out other meme participants.

*PS: I know “Til The Cops” is not from Now but I just love that picture. Mmmm…

Old School Friday: Break Up Songs

before i let go, blackstreet, goodbye love, guy, old school friday

by vivrant thang on old school friday

Great theme this week with far too many possibilities.

I could have gone with some classic grinding under the red light in the basement tunes like “Break Up To Make Up” by The Stylistics  and  “Kiss and Say Goodbye” by the Manhattans.

I know Mary’s entire “My Life” album got me through some thangs.

Can’t forget the ultimate break up song  with those unforgettable lyrics:

You gotta get on outta here with that alley-cat-coat-wearing, punch-bucket-shoe-wearing crumbcake I saw you with. Cause you dismissed!
That’s right, Silly rabbit, tricks are made for kids, don’t you know that.
You without me is like corn flakes without the milk!
This is my world. You’re just a squirrel trying to get a nut!
Now get on outta here.
Scat!
Don’t touch that coat…

Oran “Juice” Jones, “The Rain”

Still hilarious over 20 years later.

I decided to consult my top songs list and came up with two of my personal faves, “Before I Let Go” by Blackstreet and “Goodbye Love,” by Guy. I guess I’m kind of nostalgic for the return of the group.

Before I Let Go (check out young tenderoni Omar Epps and Shari Headley in the video)

Goodbye Love (I MISS Guy)

Hope you enjoyed my picks today. The party is far from over! Check out the offerings from the other Old School Friday participants.

Gossip Folks: How Dare You Disrespect The Queendom?!?!

SECOND POST FOR TODAY

What’s up fools?
You think I aint knowin yall broke Milli Vanilli
J.J. Fad wannabes aint over here gossiping bout me?
Yo how bout you buff these Pumas for 20 cents so your lights wont get cut off
You soggy breasts, cow stomachs
Yo take those baby GAP shirts off, too
You just mad cuz Payless ran out of plastic pumps for the after party
Yo by the way, go get my album
Damn!

In case you’ve been living under a rock or better yet wrapped up in more pressing issues (which I’m too worn out to rant about but you should know where I stand), you may have missed the news that Ms. Badu is expecting her third child – presumably by her man, Jay Electronica. However, as someone said to me behind the scenes, it could very well be Grandmaster Flash’s kid for all we know. Badu marches to the beat of her own drum and who knows where the day will take her. I’m hoping it’s Big Daddy Kane’s. I’m just saying.

I actually called this when I saw her on the Vortex Tour in May. I remember telling my friend that it seemed like she was hiding something underneath that get up. When she came out in the more fitted outfit, she seemed more swole than usual. But hell, I was eating up some shit too when I was in a relationship so I didn’t think anything of it.

When I saw the news posted on one of my favorite celebrity blogs, Crunk and Disorderly, along with some picture evidence (post has since been deleted or I would link since I lubs me some Fresh), I admit my judgemental side eye started twitching. Three babies, three different baby daddies? It’s one thing to screw around but why keep getting knocked up?

Apparently a lot of folks out there on the Internets are asking the same questions, but not as nicely. I didn’t see the original post on the Okayplayer message board where some people were apparently calling her way out of her name and insulting her kids, something a black Momma is NOT going to stand for ( I’m wondering why Michelle will blow but that’s another post). I’m glad I missed it though. I checked out some other sites and you would think some of these folks are the Virgin Mary reincarnated.

Apparently, somebody done fucked up now because Ms. Badu took the time to fire off a very long missive, which I’ve excerpted here. If you want to read the whole thing and aren’t on Okayplayer, you can find it here:

peace,

HOW DARE YOU DISRESPECT THE QUEENDOM…AND MY CHILDREN AND MY INTELLIGENCE.

ive never been so disgusted in all of my life .

I’LL STATE MY PEACE

i am a great mother and care giver to my 2 children and to this world . my children are 2 of the kindest and happiest people i have met. I home schooled them and taught them the ways of good to the best of my ability. i am their doctor and their nurse . and even sometimes their mother and their father.

every relationship i have been in was because i loved the person DEARLY and was dedicated to us “exclusively” FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS.

the fathers of my children are my brothers and friends . we have a great deal of respect for one another and always will. WE LOVE OUR CHILDREN TO NO END. we took our own “vows” and CONTINUE TO UPHOLD THEM.

AND THAT IS WHAT THAT IS .

question?
WHAT IS MARRIAGE ? WHO IS THE JUDGE? WE ONLY UNDERSTAND THE EXAMPLES WE ARE GIVEN ( well sort of)

WOULD IT “LOOK BETTER ” TO MARRY AND DIVIORCE AND MARRY AGAIN ? WOULD THAT BE MORALLY CORRECT ? WHATS THE DIFFERENCE ? the government’s involvement i guess. IDEALLY , IT WOULD BE EXCELLENT TO FIND THE MAN OR WOMAN WHO FULFILLS YOUR SPIRIT AND STAY FOR EVER AND EVER ( thru sickness and health till death do us part ) AND HAVE HEALTHY STRONG CHILDREN AS A RESULT OF A HEALTHY AND STRONG UNION. (this CAN happen … we need much training , however.)

OR

IS IT REALLY “GOOD” TO STAY IN A RELATIONSHIP WHERE BOTH PARTIES ARE UNFULFILLED , LONGING FOR RELIEF , BRINGING one another down as a result of improper training , creating BAD ENERGY AND EXPERIENCES FOR THE CHILD TO REPEAT ? (As a product of that kind environment I say AAAA-MEN!)

HOW MANY OF YOU GREW UP IN 2 PARENT HOMES THAT WERE MISERABLE AS FUCK ? (Preach!)
OR 2 PARENT HOMES THAT WERE NOT PERFECT BUT WORKED?
HOW MANY GREW UP IN ONE PARENT HOMES WHERE THE MOTHER WORKED HARD TO MAKE SURE YOU WERE CARED FOR BUT SHE WASNT QUITE HAPPY?
HOW ABOUT A HOME WHERE THE FATHER WAS THE MAIN CARE GIVER AND DID THE BEST HE COULD -LACKING NURTURE?
HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE A SIBLING THAT HAS A DIFFERENT FATHER OR MOTHER?
DOES HE OR SHE MEAN LESS TO YOU?
HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE MORE THAN 1 MOTHER OR FATHER OF YOUR OWN CHILDren ?
HOW MANY OF YOU HAD /OR / ARE PARENTS RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILDREN ,THAT DONT QUITE FIT ANY OF THESE DESCRIPTIONS?
HOW MANY OF YOU STAY IN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS FOR FEAR OF GOING TO HELL?
HOW MANY HOS OUT THERE … THAT HAVE KIDS TO GET A PAYDAY?
HOW MANY PEOPLE GETTING THEY ASS KICKED AND ARE FORCED TO SUBMIT CAUSE YO MAMA GOT HER ASS KICKED?
THEN WHAT is CORRECT?

if i loose you as a fan because i want to continue to have children then FUCK OFF… WHO NEEDS YOU ….CERTAINLY NOT ME … KICK ROCKS … CALL TYRONE … PACK LIGHT …. BITE ME

i know you are having fun , but what if it were you and your children? my son is 10 . my daughter, 4 .

peace

ANALOGUE GIRL

and if this post is not clear
kiss my placenta.

Alrighty then.

Ms. Badu is certainly making some good points here. As someone who grew up in a two-parent household that was miserable as hell and am currently in therapy to unlearn some of the bad behavioral traits that resulted, I can see why marriage and the traditional two-parent household isn’t always the answer. My mother stayed primarily to give me that. It definitely afforded me some better opportunities – such as a suburban upbringing, better education and exposure to things like travel and interacting with people from different cultures- things I may not have gotten growing up in Jersey City, NJ. However, she suffered and it’s definitely affected me in various ways. Erykah is trying to avoid that for her kids.

This three baby daddy thing still gets my side eye a twitching. But bottom line, who the hell am I to judge? I am not without sin myself so I don’t need to be casting any stones! Besides, as long as I don’t have to pay for the crumbsnatchers what do I care how many babies she has? I’m more concerned about Keylolo in the hood dropping kids left and right that my tax dollars have to feed. Can we get her ass to stop popping out kids instead of concerning ourselves with what a woman who has more money than most of us will ever see in a lifetime is doing with her vagina?

So no, Ms Badu, you won’t ever have to worry about losing a fan over here. At the end of the day, it’s all about the music.

Let me know what ya’ll think about this in the comments.
