It’s a funky Monday
Not quite like Friday
It’s a funky Monday
Wish it was Saturday
A so-so week led to a pretty good weekend. It ended on an especially high note and I feel really good about what’s in store the rest of this year. I got a feeling I’ll be celebrating lots of good times in the months to come.
Damn shame it was so short though. Always is.
Now here we are on a funky Monday, but funky doesn’t have to be a bad thing…especially on this music lover’s blog. Every since I watched this documentary on VH-1 Soul about the evolution of funk, highlighting some of the artists I mention below, I’m been funking non-stop over here.
So if you got the Monday blues, watch some classic video from a few of my favorite funk bands / artists.
*update: I wrote this post last night and knew it was right on time when they played “Knee Deep” on the radio on my way in this morning. I know people driving next to me thought I was a plum fool. Don’t look at me cross-eyed. You know you cut up in the car when your song comes on!
Funkateers, enjoy!
Tell me about some of your favorite funk bands/artists and songs in the comments.

yesterday i received a good schoolin’ from my aunt about what’s true old school music. so it’s a good deal @ you posting these videos and the link. i appreciate it. i watched so much old music yesterday that now i really appreciate the old school grooves.
i absolutely love the song i rather be with you. so freaky and real.
also, i realized three things yesterday:
1) marvin gaye was a monster musician – inner city blues is the bomb song
2) i found the video on you & i – stevie wonder classic
3) chaka khan was a sex pot back in the days
@ Don – Go head getting your schoolin on! I know you watched some good stuff if you had an elder doing the edumucating 🙂 I also LOVE “Rather Be With You.” I’m SO shamed to say I don’t remember the song before hearing it in Baby Boy…*sigh* But whatever it takes.
You already know how I feel about Marvin round these parts. I’m giving you the side-eye for noticing that about Chaka. 🙂
lol @ edumucating
I remember the song I’d Rather Be With You wayy back when my aunt in Milwaukee used to always have me putting “her record” on. I think that’s where I learned most of my deejay skills from as well.
Chaka was seductive.
I wrote down a list of songs that I can include on my weekend golden oldies blog segment.
Here’s one of ’em. You probably don’t know anything about this here youngin’. LOL.

Let me find out you’re a man of many talents 😉 You deejay too! If you do any mixes, you should post them.
Now, Don. You know I know about that Marvin! I need to write another “What’s Going On” or “Makes Me Wanna Holler” post to remind you 🙂 I remember you saying that was your favorite Marvin song.
Thanks for funking with me on this post. Apparently no one else was in a “funky” mood 🙂
Hey VT!
Sorry to get here late, but I been under the gun IRL lately (not the least of which was taking care of the taxman!) Love this post about the funk. It reminds me of the high school and college days and all those great house parties… Whoo-Hoo!
However, no funk lineup from back in the day would be complete without the “Players from OHIO”! Their early stuff (“Pain”, “Pleasure”) was outa sight… and no party back then was right if you didn’t have “Skintight”, “Fire” or “Love Rollercoaster”! And let’s not forget Kool & the Gang, “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging”, baby!
Man O man… talkin’ about all this old school funk is getting me all worked up. I think I feel a “Vibrant Thang Funky Monday” mix comin’ on!
Hey You! Oh TRUST I understand real life getting in the way. Just glad you stopped by. I knew you would have some good funk to add to this list. I know there are SO many I left off. Fire, Skintight, Jungle Boogie and Hollywood Swinging are among my faves in particular.
I’ve been dying to do a mix with you. When things slow down for you, let’s make it happen!
