“New” feature here on Songs In The Key of Life where I’ll shine the spotlight on artists from my underrated singers lists. Whenever I am fortunate enough to catch any of them live, I’ll be sharing the experience under the new category, “Artist Spotlight.”

As I mentioned, a couple weeks ago, I attended the 4th annual Can A Sista Rock A Mic? concert series where I had the opportunity to check out several of the artists on my underrated female soul singer list. One in particular, Liv Warfield has stayed on repeat in the ‘pod ever since. She is definitely an artist you should know.

Liv has long been on my radar but with such an overwhelming amount of music on deck right now, I hadn’t yet pressed play on her 2006 release, Embrace Me. Can I get a late pass?

From the moment she stepped on the stage that night and grabbed the mic, I knew all we would be able to do was hold on for the ride. Her self-assured stage presence said loud and clear, “I was born to do this.” “Embrace Me”damnit!

Growing up in Illinois in a household that didn’t embrace musical expression, Liv instead filtered her talent into excelling in track and field. I can’t imagine what it must have felt like to hide such a voice. After moving to Portland, Liv honed her skills in part by performing karaoke. She began performing with a hip-hop band in 2002. In 2004, The Liv Warfield Project took the Portland music scene by storm. Embrace Me hit the shelves tin 2006. Oh but if she would have stayed on this biannual schedule, we should have been due a new album this year!

Until that day comes, check out the live performance of some songs from Embrace Me. I must admit while I love the studio album, the live version of the songs are what pulls me in. The raw passion and soul she brings to the words on stage reminds me of one of my all-time favorite artists (and one of Liv’s musical idols) Mary J. Blige. Much like when I see Mary, Liv makes you want to get up out your seat, wave your Martin Luthada Kang church fan and get to shouting. She takes you to chuuuuch. Let’s hope this underrated soul singer sees even half the success that Mary has had. It’s truly well-deserved.

Stay tuned for spotlights on some of the other super talented artists I saw at CASRAM who are responsible for the “new” flava in my ear.

On Obama and Race: The Richard Trumka Video

You may have already seen this floating around the Interwebs. For those that haven’t, if you have never looked at another video on this site, I ask you to view this one.

The impassioned story AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Trumka tells here is one that I encountered myself a few weeks ago.

I had lunch with my former boss who I love(d?) to death. She asked me what I thought of the whole election and of course I go on about how much I heart Obama. I made the mistake of asking her what she thought. She said her husband was pro-Obama all the way. However, she was not so sure. There was just “something about him” that she couldn’t put a finger on. Something about him she didn’t trust.

You don’t say?

I asked her what she thought of his policies and his stance on the issues. She agreed with those for the most part.

“So what is it? “I pressed, knowing full and damn well what the answer was. Daring her to say it.

She just didn’t know what it was. By the way, she also thought Michelle was too cocky.

I wanted to say, “Yes, she’s a real uppity negress isn’t she?”

Later on in the conversation, she talked about the Left Behind series and how she felt like it would come true with an Obama-led administration. She even likened him to the Anti-Christ.

I was having a mellow day so I managing to keep my face neutral while my blood was boiling inside.

She says she would die before she ever voted for McCain. She thought of not voting at all but would likely just hold her nose and vote for Obama.

Whatever it takes. Just push the right button or keep your ass at home.

Perhaps I’ll send this video to her.

We’re so glad this has gone viral – with almost 300,000 hits and growing.

Please continue to send it on. It’s a message that many need to hear. Folks you wouldn’t think need to hear it. It’s one thing for them to publicly say Obama got their vote. But what will really happen when they go inside that voting booth?

On Wednesday in DC, Can A Sista Rock A Mic? kicks off it’s 4th year of showcasing underrated female soul singers and hip hop artists from across the nation. The festival continues through Saturday with a free show in Silver Spring.

If you’re in the DC area or able to road trip it here, the lineup for each night is one not to be missed. If not, yours truly will bring it to you here.

Check out the lineup and visit the CASRAM site for more information.

I’m excited to say that this will be my first time seeing the majority of these artists perform live. If you’re not able to make it to the area for the festival, please visit these artists’ Myspace pages and support their music. It’s hard out here for a songstress/ femcee – particularly an independent one.

Not that you should need convincing, but check out some live video I recorded from some of the artists that will be appearing at the festival this year.

N’Dambi, “Daydream” and “Call Me”

Yazarah, “Same Page”

Emily King, “It Was You”

Old School Friday…oh how I missed thee!

Perfect theme to come back to. I am the QUEEN of babymaking music…without the baby of course. I just like practicing.

Don’t ask how I know but a Luther album was likely spinning when I was conceived. However, I decided to  go with a group that will always have a place on any babymaking soundtrack I put together – The Isley Brothers.  Appropriately, they have  an album called BabyMaking Music.

So many songs from this legendary group over the years that I could have chosen. What you know about “Between The Sheets?” “Caravan of Love?” Or maybe some “Footsteps In The Dark?”

Ya’ll don’t know nothing about that. So let me set the scene for you.

First, he asks you to “Spend The Night”

During which he is hoping and praying that you’ll be an “Instatiable Woman”

After it’s all over, if you’re lucky, you’ll feel like you’ve just taken a “Voyage To Atlantis.”

You can thank me later by naming your little girl or boy after me. Hit me up privately for the government name 🙂

If you can handle it, check out the other OSF participants. Don’t do nothing I wouldn’t do now!

‘Gettin Up’ With Q-Tip!

q-tip, q-tip a tribe called quest, q-tip listening party, q-tip new album, q-tip renaissance

Even though we both fly…

When I got the invite to attend an in-store listening party, at which Q-Tip would preview tracks from his upcoming album Renaissance, my answer was a resounding “Hellll yeah!”

You already know how much I’m anticipating this album. Not to mention, in many ways, Q-Tip is one of my muses. I used to go by the name “Total Package” in the blogosphere, which was a spin on my sorority line name. One day it just came to me how every time the song comes on, I lose my mind. I think those that know me offline would agree that the name just fits – as does the nickname, “Aunt Viv.” That’s another post for another day.

Although I played it cool because in a sense I was there working, I was a little starstruck being in such close proximity to the dude who was one of the main reasons my bells were ROCKED just a few short months ago.  Any self-respecting fan of real hip-hop should feel me on that.

There was no need for that though. Without even spending any length of time talking to him, it was clear that although Q-Tip is a musical genius, he is still regular folk (you too Questo). As he talked about his love for the music and how after all these years, he still gets butterflies before he performances, it was all genuine.

He made the important point, that should sound familiar, which is that you gotta love what you do. He said that practitioners of hip-hop today may be hard workers and hustlers but you have to truly love the music. Q-Tip says that even today, some twenty years deep in the game, he still pinches himself because he can’t believe that he’s blessed to be able to do what he does as an artist – which is to bring us real hip-hop like what you’ll find on Renaissance.

Check out Q-Tip taking us behind the scenes: “The Making of Renaissance“

Here is the album cover ( which gets my stamp of approval) on which you can see a tracklisting.

Here is Q-Tip giving us a taste of “Dance On Glass,” “Offishal,” and “Life Is Better.”

We were fortunate to hear “Shaka,” which features a speech from Obama. Q-Tip has stumped for Obama and the song has the campaign’s approval. It’s also dedicated to the memory of Dilla and Daddy Q-Tip.

Check out “Move” and then “Shaka”

Since I know we have some D’Angelo fans on here, you’ll be happy to know that Q-Tip also confirmed that he is in fact hard at work in the studio and his new music is all that and then some. Color me naive but I’m fully expecting a new album in my hands in 2009.

It was cool to be up close and personal with Q-Tip while he was sharing the music. At times, I felt like a voyeur – like we weren’t even there. He was lost all up in it – which was probably a good thing since there were folks there more concerned with shooting the shit than LISTENING at a LISTENING party. But that’s another rant for another day.

Those that were there for the music were truly feeling what they heard and are excited about the album, which will be in stores on November 4 – the day of change!  That’s the day we will have a renaissance in music and hopefully the beginning of a renaissance in this country.

The night ended perfectly when I was able to get my Renaissance poster signed “To Vivrant Thang.” Check one more thing off the bucket list.

On November 4, I know I plan to go vote and then cop the album in that order. You should do the same. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about a hip-hop album hitting the shelves. From what I heard, it will be worth the wait.

More video will be on my You Tube channel in the coming days. I know you’re already subscribed so you shouldn’t miss out. Meantime, you can head over to Soul Bounce and check out nOva’s review.

Let me know what you think of these tracks in the comments.
