Happy Friday Folks.

This week’s theme is singer turned actor or actor turned singer.

It still hurts to think about “Babygirl” and what a loss the music world suffered seven years ago. Can you believe she would have been 30 next month?

As I’m sure you remember, Aaliyah’s star also shined brightly on the big screen. She had major roles in Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned and was set to film The Matrix at the time of her death.

We’ll forever be missing you BabyGirl. Often imitated, never duplicated. Never. This means you Uncle Cici.

Let’s celebrate her music today with three of my favorites. I chose one from each of her albums, which was HARD because I loved just about every song on One In A Million.

Title track from debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number”

Title track from second album, “One In A Million” (made my top 50 list)

“Rock The Boat” from her last album, Aaliyah. I don’t think we’ve ever seen her look more beautiful (if that’s even possible). It was also one of my favorite videos of hers and is still a bit hard to watch.

Share your favorite Aaliyah songs in the comments and be sure to check out the other OSF participants.

This picture captures just how I like to listen to my jazz.

Other than mentioning how I attend the Capital Jazz Fest every year, I don’t talk much about my love for jazz in this space. I have the feeling if I did, I’d lose a lot of readers.  Hey, you’ll have to deal with it today though.

There is only one song that immediately comes to mind when I think of jazz music. There is one song I can put on that I know will somehow take me through whatever emotions I may be experiencing at that moment. It’s a complex, beautiful piece by two of THE best to ever do it.

You may be familiar with this song from the movie Love Jones, which is where I first heard and fell in love with it.

Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, “In A Sentimental Mood”, 1962

Okay, I’m back for an encore.

If you call yourself a true lover of jazz, Miles Davis Kind Of Blue is essential for your collection. Not owning this album would be like having the cornflakes without the milk. I just don’t get you.

Here’s a live performance  from 1959 of “So What” from that epic album, which also happens to be the best selling jazz record of all time. Trane joins him for the performance.  I couldn’t take my eyes (or ears!) off of it. I think you’ll agree.

Enjoy your weekend and be sure to check out the other old school friday participants for some more smooth jazz to get you through your day.

barack obama post election songs, earth wind and fire, james brown payback, old school friday

Well my friends, we’ve come to the end of the road. Or is it just the beginning?

For me, it marks the beginning of me seeing lots and lots of the above 🙂

Aren’t they lovely?

For the past few days, I’ve ben rocking nothing but Obama-nalia,jumping for joy like I’m on a trampoline, breaking out into song, and dancingat random no matter who is watching.Seriously.

There are several songs that have been on my playlist since Tuesday. Today,I’m in the mood for my favorite. band. ever Earth Wind & Fire to get this party started! They need to play the inaugural ball (which I’m praying to score a ticket to.) There is actually a chance of this happening because of where I work!

September

Shining Star (YES HE IS!)

And because I’m petty, here’s some “Payback” for McCain/Palin supporterslikethe ones that booed Obama during his concession speech.

Okay, that wasn’t nice but I needed an excuse to post that. It sounds so damn funky!

Enjoy your Obama celebrations this weekend ya’ll.I’m taking a post-election sojourn through acouple of southern blue states. That should narrow it WAY down for you! I didn’t get it together enough to leave any posts in the queue. So we may be dark for a few days. Just know that I’ll be backkkk!

Old School Friday: Obama’s “Fight” Song

I decided to do a bit of a different take on the theme for this week, which is “Fight Song For Your Candidate.” What is the song he needs to win; his background music; his call to battle?

I can’t believe we are now four days away from a Black man being the leader of the free world. While I’m excited beyond what I can even express to you here, I can’t help but think of what’s ahead for him. The first Black president digging us out of the deepest ditch this country has ever been in after eight years of Lil Bush’s fuck ups.  I can’t wrap my mind around the sleepless nights ahead as he tries to govern in a world where there are animals already wishing him dead.

There is only one person who is going to get him through this. There’s no way he would be where he is without her. And he will not make it through the first one hundred days without her having his back. Her voice and soothing presence will be his background music – and his fight song in the tough days ahead.

Today, I chose three songs that celebrate their love.

Mariah Carey/Pavarotti, “Hero”

Anita Baker, “You Bring Me Joy”

Curtis Mayfield, “The Makings Of You”

As I prepare to press publish, a McCain attack ad is playing on the television.  Can someone please press the fast forward button?

Please.

This is a great theme this week. Please visit the other Old School Friday participants for more good theme music for this historic campaign.

Old School Friday: Duets

janet jackson, janet jackson duets, old school friday

When we were left to our own devices one Friday, I actually already covered this theme.

For this round, I decided to shine the spotlight on Penny who was in town on Wednesday night for her first day back at work since calling out slick sick for many of her scheduled tour stops. I hear it was a good show, although LL Cool J was M.I.A. without explanation. I guess he decided his time was better spent hawking those expensive ass Sears duds.

So to honor Penny’s visit, I decided to highlight a couple of her duets with hip-hop artists.

Enjoy!

Go on and make beautiful music with other OSF participants. Have a great weekend!
