Before we get into this week’s theme, I first have to send major congratulations out to the staff of SoulBounce and Afrobella, who both won WELL-deserved Black Weblog Awards. As you all know, these are my two favorite blogs hands down. I am subscribed to well over 200. Nuff said.

If you’re not a stalker reader of either of these sites, get on it like yesterday. If you are, please stop by and congratulate noVa, Butta, Imani, Will of Soul Bounce and the lovely Bella (who is giving US the prize!).

On another note, I know my blogging here has been light However, I often “microblog” on Twitter. I plan to start talking more about the music I’m listening to over there as well as my random musings that I don’t always have time to post here.  So if you’re on Twitter, feel free to follow a sista. I’ll add you as well so I can get to know my readers a bit better.

Let get to the getting!

This week’s theme is “Disco Inferno!”  We’re highlighting some of our favorite disco songs. When I saw this week’s theme, one song immediately popped into my head. After doing a little research, I found my thread.

I’m highlighting The Emotions, an all-female soul, disco, and R&B singing group of the late-1970s and into the 1980s. “Best of My Love” and “I Don’t Wanna Love Your Love” were two songs that are ingrained in my memory from childhood. My Momma must have let her 8-track rock til her 8-track popped!

Here is “Best of My Love”

It shouldn’t have surprised me to see that The Emotions worked with Maurice White of my Favorite. Band. Ever. Earth Wind and Fire on “Best of My Love.” Members of The Emotions collaborated on and off the stage with Earth Wind and Fire.

Here is “Boogie Wonderland,” by Earth Wind and Fire and The Emotions.

Beautiful music indeed.

Now boogie on over to the other OSF participants pages and keep the party going!

This week we’re featuring songs with a political/social-political themes.

Plenty of ways I could have gone with this. Immediately I thought of spotlighting James Brown and his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, specifically how he used his music to heal America after Dr. King’s assassination.

However, I just felt the need to keep celebrating the music of Issac Hayes.  I’ve also been listening to a lot of old school hip hop this week, getting hyped for The Legends of Hip Hop concert tomorrow night.  As we know, Ike was rapping before we even knew what we even knew what it was.  Seems fitting.

I consulted Kevin Nottingham’s list of songs that sampled his music and here’s what I came up with. Not all old school but they sure did pay tribute to the classics.

“Hood Took Me Under”, Compton’s Most Wanted (samples “Walk On By”)

Got another gang story to tell.
Peep, about how a black nigga was born in hell.
And right then and there it’s no hope
cause a nigga can’t escape the gangs and the dope.
Damn! And when its black on black, that makes it shitty.
Can’t survive in the Compton city.

“Me Against The World,” Tupac  (samples “Walk On By”)
Had to have some ‘Pac on the list. Should also mention “Souljah’s Story” from his debut album 2Pacalypse. It samples “No Name Bar” from the Shaft album.

When will I finally get to rest? Through this suppression
they punish the people that’s askin questions
And those that possess, steal from the ones without possesions
The message I stress: to make it stop study your lessons
Don’t settle for less – even the genius asks-es questions
Be grateful for blessings
Don’t ever change, keep your essence
The power is in the people and politics we address
Always do your best, don’t let the pressure make you panic
And when you get stranded
And things don’t go the way you planned it
Dreamin of riches, in a position of makin a difference
Politicians and hypocrites, they don’t wanna listen

“I Can’t Go To Sleep”, Wu-Tang Clan f/ Isaac Hayes. He appears in video. (samples “Walk On By”)

I can’t go to sleep, I can’t shut my eyes
They shot the father of his moms, killed him seven times
They shot Malcolm in the chest front of his little seeds
Jesse watched, as they shot King on the balcony
They spat at Marcus, Garvey cause he tried to spark us
with the knowledge of ourselves, and our forefathers
Ohh Jacqueline you heard the rifle shots cracklin
Her husband head in her hair, you tried to put it back in
AMERICA’S WATCHIN, BLOOD STAINED INK BLOTCHES
MEDGAR TOOK ONE TO THE SKULL FOR INTERGRATING COLLEGE
WHAT’S THE SCIENCE? SOMEBODY? THIS IS TRICK KNOWLEDGE
THEY TRY TO KEEP US ENSLAVED AND STILL SCRAPE FOR DOLLARS

Right on.

Old School Friday: That Motown Sound

I didn’t have to put much thought into this one. There is only ONE  way this could have gone down on a blog named Songs In The Key of Life. We are going to celebrate Stevie as much as we can in these parts. Didn’t matter that he will probably be a popular choice today. That’s just the way it has to go down. Besides, I needed some Stevie today after witnessing an incidence of DWB (driving while black) while I was in the midst of enjoying a concert.

The 8th Wonder of the World has been signed to Motown since he was twelve. He is now 58. With the label, he has produced “35 U.S. albums – 28 major studio releases – with album sales totaling more than 72 million units. The singer/songwriter has scored more than 30 Top Ten Hits, 11 #1 Pop singles, winning 19 Grammys (and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in ’96).”

Bow down to the “Master Blaster” with two songs from the early stages of his career that surely have that Motown sound.

Hey Love, 1966

Uptight (Everything Is Alright), 1966

This is going to be a good one today so be sure to check out the other OSF participants.

Old School Friday: Let’s Stay Together Baby

faith, faith soon as i get home, maxwell, maxwell til the cops come knocking, old school friday

by vivrant thang on old school friday

Last week we were breaking up.

Now we making up.

For some strange reason, I had a hard time coming up with “making up” songs. So I just went with two artists whose return to the music scene I am impatiently waiting for. Things just fell into place from there. Neither of these artists are “old school.” Sure seems like it though since both of them have deprived us for more than a minute.

First up, we got Faith Evans “Soon As I Get Home.” Who wouldn’t want to make up with Faye after hearing this sweet plea?

Baby if you give me just
another chance (oh baby)
I can show you love (more love)
Promise I’ll be true to you
(you don’t ever have to worry)
You don’t ever have to worry (no, no, no)
Cuz I’m gonna treat you right (baby I miss you)
Baby I miss you just want to kiss you
Hold you in my arms

And you know the best part of making up, right?

Gotta do the damn thing, “‘Til The Cops Come Knockin!”

*fans self*

Sorry ya’ll. That song is…QUITE special to a sista.

Hope you enjoyed my picks today. Hell, I know I did.

Be sure to check out other meme participants.

*PS: I know “Til The Cops” is not from Now but I just love that picture. Mmmm…

Old School Friday: Break Up Songs

before i let go, blackstreet, goodbye love, guy, old school friday

by vivrant thang on old school friday

Great theme this week with far too many possibilities.

I could have gone with some classic grinding under the red light in the basement tunes like “Break Up To Make Up” by The Stylistics  and  “Kiss and Say Goodbye” by the Manhattans.

I know Mary’s entire “My Life” album got me through some thangs.

Can’t forget the ultimate break up song  with those unforgettable lyrics:

You gotta get on outta here with that alley-cat-coat-wearing, punch-bucket-shoe-wearing crumbcake I saw you with. Cause you dismissed!
That’s right, Silly rabbit, tricks are made for kids, don’t you know that.
You without me is like corn flakes without the milk!
This is my world. You’re just a squirrel trying to get a nut!
Now get on outta here.
Scat!
Don’t touch that coat…

Oran “Juice” Jones, “The Rain”

Still hilarious over 20 years later.

I decided to consult my top songs list and came up with two of my personal faves, “Before I Let Go” by Blackstreet and “Goodbye Love,” by Guy. I guess I’m kind of nostalgic for the return of the group.

Before I Let Go (check out young tenderoni Omar Epps and Shari Headley in the video)

Goodbye Love (I MISS Guy)

Hope you enjoyed my picks today. The party is far from over! Check out the offerings from the other Old School Friday participants.
