another bad creation, hi five, kid singing groups, old school friday, the boys

by vivrant thang on old school fridays

Thank the Lawd it’s Friday! Last couple of Fridays, I actually stayed in if you can believe it. Not that staying in is always a bad thing – if ya know what I mean! But I am ready to get out and jump start another musically delicious weekend.

Tonight, I’ll be going to hear some live music at a spot popular with the locals for it’s strong dranks and good, greasy food to soak it up with. Saturday, can you believe I will actually miss Bilal to be out at an outdoor ampitheatre enjoying the sounds of Rahsaan Patterson and Kindred. I know, I can’t believe it either. Sunday is up in the air. I have a ticket to see Raheem, Chrisette and Dwele. But I may end up in Baltimore for the African American Heritage Festival, even though I said I wasn’t fooling with them anymore after the way they treated Bilal. I’ll hold a grudge for my baby now!

Anyhow, the theme this week is “kid groups” and it is right on time as I really re-discovered some real feel-good music. These videos made me reminisce and smile. You should have seen me up there trying to do the moves. I was quickly reminded that I am no longer the spry teenybopper I was when these groups were in their prime.

ABC (Another Bad Creation or as I like to call them “All Bebe’s Chillun” ) You know they look like they were really bad!

Another Bad Creation (sometimes called ABC for short) is a R&B and rap musical group from Atlanta, Georgia. They were discovered by Michael Bivins. Bivins served as manager and producer of the group, who became a part of the short-lived East Coast Family alongside such acts as Bell Biv DeVoe and Boyz II Men. BC’s debut album Coolin’ at the Playground Ya Know! was released in 1991. The album’s two biggest singles were the first and second singles: “Iesha” and “Playground”. A cover of New Edition’s song “Jealous Girl” followed. (Wiki)

Normally, I would have posted all three, but we’ve been slapped on the hand for posting too many. So I’m going with “Jealous Girl” because for one, it’s all about that grind at 1:40. Secondly, tell me you don’t fall out when one of them little birdchested crumbsnatchers tells ole girl “Don’t even try it. Well I guess you win some and you lose some. Point blank girl you lost this one.”

The Boys

The Boys was an R&B quartet comprised of the four Abdulsamad brothers, Khiry (born in 1973), Hakim (born in 1975), Tajh (born in 1976), and Bilal (born in 1979). The group started out singing in Carson, California. As an act, the group was very self-sufficient, writing and producing their own music. The group befriended Babyface in 1985. Together with L.A. Reid, the two men crafted the tracks “Lucky Charm,” “A Little Romance,” and “Dial My Heart.” The public loved the songs as well as “Dial My Heart” reached #1 on the R&B charts in 1988. The Boys released their debut album, Messages From The Boys during the same year and it performed very well. The Boys second album was their self-titled The Boys, which was released in 1990. The album featured a hit single with “Crazy” which reached #1 in the same year. (Wiki)

I still love this video and how it spoofs hits like “Thriller,” “Rhythm Nation,” and “Every Little Step” – to name a few. Not to mention I had a MAJOR crush on Hakeem. I am thrilled to see he has aged quite nicely. Himand his brothers are still making music today under the name Suns of Light. Who knew? Their Daddy even has a You Tube channel set up featuring their old and new music. This is a “Where Are They Now” with a happy ending.

This last one is dedicated to someone special. I like the way!

Enjoy the weekend and don’t forget to check out other OSF Participants!

I screamed at the top of my lungs like I had no sense…and no neighbors. Then I felt faint. I couldn’t stop saying “Oh my God!!!”

I miss the hair but HE’S still “Simply Beautiful.” And he’s still got IT!

I have never recorded anything off of the television before because one, I prefer to stick to live concerts. Two, both of my televisions are old as hell (as you’ll see). However, I had to make an exception.

Groove with me, ya’ll.

update 6/26: Well Debra got her panties in a bunch so my video has been deleted from Da Tube. Hope you got to watch it. I’m sure others will pop up because BET will re-air the awards bout fifty eleven times. You can watch it and other performances at the BET site.

Update: 6/27: Sssh! I’m reposting again courtesy of my girl DJ Diva. Let’s see how long this lasts! Get it while it’s hot!

Now pray with me… that he hurries up this way again.

Leave some love on his Myspace page, which he personally updates.

I’ll talk a bit about the rest of the BET Awards as soon as my side-eye heals a bit (hint, hint). Meantime, for a hilarious play-by-play and some major tomfoolery in the comment section, check out Butta’s live blog over at Soul Bounce.

My Favorite Things: Underrated Male Soul Singers

Ladies first.

Now it’s time to show the brothas some love.

Last Wednesday, I was reminded that I never got around to compiling a list of my favorite underrated male soul singers after the female singer post got so much love. The Soul Bounce crew and I had dinner with Anthony David, a highly underrated soul singer whose music I’ve been enjoying since his debut solo album, Three Chords and The Truth was released four years ago. (Thanks to DJ YZO over at Industry Soul for making it happen).

After dinner, we headed up the street to see him perform songs from his latest release, Acey Ducey, which is in stores today. It’s a “best of” CD of sorts, compiling songs that appeared on his first two releases. Now he’s signed to India.Arie’s Soulbird label and I expect he will be getting down to the business of bringing us some new hotness very soon. Meanwhile, Soul Bounce got the exclusive on a new track to tide us over until then.

I have to say I’ve never met a cooler cat. Felt like I was hanging with one of my boys when he teased me about nursing my drink. I mean, I was trying to be on my best behavior and all. Under normal circumstances…

I’ve seen him live four or five times and I have to say he was at the top of his game with this performance. Not sure if he is more comfortable in intimate venues or if being newly signed to a major label has caused him to step his game up! However, I was torn between recording the whole show and wanting to get up there and rock with him and the band. Seriously.

Check him out:

Spittin Game

Krooked Cop

More of his concert video over on my You Tube channel, which is up to over 300 videos now! Ya’ll have no idea of the blood, sweat and tears I’ve put into that thing. Be sure to check it out and subscribe. I’m working on a page on this site that will have all the video listed and categorized. Stay tuned!

So did you enjoy those performances? Well here are some of his other soul brethren I think you should know that don’t be getting no airplay. Again, this list is by no means exhaustive. Like you did on the underrated female soul singers post, I need you to hip me to artists I may have overlooked.

Let’s hear it for the boys!

Badu’s Voodoo: Review of The Vortex Tour

by vivrant thang on feeding the music jones

Ya’ll already know I was all over New Amerykah before it even hit store shelves. So it was a no-brainer that I would be front and center for the Vortex Tour. I decided to go up to the Baltimore show in early May at the outdoor Pier Six Pavilion. (Yea, I know I’m way late with this!).

The Roots opened to a somewhat nonchalant crowd. I don’t know if folks recognized that they were watching hip hop legends fifteen years in the game – and one of the illest MCs to ever touch the mic. We won’t even mention the uber-talented ?uestlove. There were a few heads up out their seats showing love. Maybe the real party was back in the cheap seats. Just seemed to me that for the most part, the crowd that was there and not on CP time were (im)patiently waiting for Ms. Badu to grace us with her presence.

I thought for sure they would get hype on “You Got Me.”

Negative.

Just criminal, I tell you.

Although it was another consistent performance, I definitely prefer to see The Roots in venues where heads are in the know…where the energy is high. I guess I’ve been spoiled.

Here they are performing:

You Got Me

Rising Down

I remember feeling an unusually high sense of anticipation before Erykah took the stage. What would the she be wearing? What would be sitting on top of her head this time? When I last saw her some eightyears ago or so, she was still all about the headwraps and incense. There was some predictability there. Now who knows what the chameleon is going to come with next…and I love it!

Don’t tell nobody but these pictures were shot by Todd over at ishootshows.com three weeks after my Baltimore show. This is exactly what she was was wearing…from head to toe. I was lucky to find these excellent photos, huh?

I was mildly surprised there wasn’t an extended wait for her to take the stage. Since time is for white people and all. When her background singers took the stage, the girl sitting next to me swore one of them was Erykah. I hadn’t read much about the tour but I immediately said that wasn’t Erykah but must be her sister. I was right. Evidentially I’m very much behind on my Badu news because I’m not sure I knew she had a sister in the business.

The first half of her set was all New Amerykah. I kept holding my breath for my favorite, “That Hump.” It was not to be. Here’s the set list (might have missed a few)

  • “Amerykhan Promise”
  • “The Healer”
  • “Me”
  • “My People”
  • “The Cell”
  • “Twinkle”

Amerykhan Promise

My People

Twinkle

As she performed, it was hard to take your eyes away from the one-woman show. You barely noticed anyone else on the stage. Even as she would turn her attention to her beat machine, I still found myself watching her every move. And that black girl sure plays some funky music on that thing! As she boogies on down, you want to get up there and do it to death with her. But alas, it’s a private party. You can watch, but don’t think you can get with her. As she rhetorically asked one girl, “You think you can shake it better than me?” Of course not.

The crowd, who may not have had time to scoop up New Amerykah yet, really came alive when she went into her classic hits from the first three albums – particularly tracks from the classic, Baduizm. I feel like she would have rather not. She strikes me as the type that wants to keep moving forward, which she will with two more albums on tap this year! But that would not make for very happy customers.

They want to hear classics like

  • &…On
  • Appletree
  • Otherside of the Game
  • Danger
  • Times A Wastin

Appletree

Otherside of the Game (LOVE. THIS. SONG)

In between the classics, she had to remind us that she had some new stuff out! Ya’ll can groove to this old stuff but don’t forget the new. She performed two more of my favorites from New Amerykah, “Soldier” and “Master Teacher.” I particularly love “Master Teacher” because my beloved Bilal throws his voice in the mix.

Master Teacher

She left the stage and returned for her encore with “Green Eyes,” which is probably my second favorite track on Mama’s Gun. We weren’t ready for Cirque de Badu though! She brought out her exercise balls and put on quite a show (and got quite a workout!) She also took the time to introduce the security guard to the mysteries of HER personal vortex. Only Erykah. Gotta love her.

To my surprise and to the extreme chagrin of the woman standing beside me, she ended the show with “Bag Lady” and “Tyrone.” She came down through the audience and “picked up some good shit.” I was over “Tyrone” a long time ago. The crowd wasn’t. Personally, I wanted some of that “Honey.” It was not to be. I haven’t heard of any show where she has performed it. Guess she has her reasons.

Bag Lady

Another great one down in the books. I’m not sure if Baltimore was near one of the five natural vortices. But damnit, we sure created one that night!

Time Will Reveal

debarge, single women and relationships, time will reveal

I know just how you feel
But this time love’s for real
In time it will reveal
That special love that’s
deep inside of us
Will all reveal in time

Aside: Someone told me today that I seem to be losing my “blog juice” so I figured I better get in here and give ya’ll a real post instead of a bunch of videos! I know posting has been light but between an increasingly active social calendar and my work schedule, I will probably struggle to eke out 2-3 posts a week. I blog late in the evenings and I tell you after the day I had all I wanted when I made it home was a stiff one and some mindless television. Even now, I’m struggling to write this (and it will probably show) But I do what I have to do.

And it’s only going to get worse. When you work for an organization where President Obama (yup, I said it!) will be making a special visit this week to meet with the upper brass, you can imagine the work I have ahead of me this political season. I hope ya’ll can hang in there with a sista.

Now on to the subject at hand.

When I turned 30 and then two weeks later ended my last relationship, I vowed that was the last boyfriend I would ever have.

Things moved so fast and feelings grew so quickly that I didn’t have take a lot of time to really think about what I was getting myself into….who I was getting myself into a commitment with. All I knew was what I felt in those moments. I intended to take the time to let it grow and for things to be revealed before I called myself his and only his. But it just happened. I woke up one day and he was calling me his girlfriend. Really, that’s how it went. And I went along with it. I just felt so much. I couldn’t verbalize what my mind was screaming. NEED. MORE. TIME!

After that fiasco mercifully came to an end, I promised myself a couple of things.

In my experience, not many people can keep up an act for longer than a few months. Somewhere before or by that time, that person will begin to show you who they really are – if you’re paying attention. The representative will slowly begin to fade into the background and you’ll begin the discover the crust of this person. All along, while shit is new, you’ve been enjoying the white part of the bread. And as we know, that’s not where the realness is at. Now this is not to say that the person is intentionally misrepresenting themselves. We’re all on our best behavior in the beginning.

It’s so easy – and may even seem natural – to get caught up in the rapture and hurriedly change your Myspace status to “In A Relationship.” Ya’ll know what I’m talmbout! But who are you really in a relationship with? Do you really know yet?

For me, I’ve decided that the next time someone worthy of my attention comes along, I’m going to take my time and get to know him before he becomes the only one I’m giving the “red light special” to. What’s the rush? I need to let time reveal who I am really dealing with. Hell, I didn’t commit to buying my home quickly. I didn’t make any other major decisions in my life with the snap of a finger. I need to put the same thought into choosing a life partner as well.

Yes, I said a life partner.

The other decision I made is that at this point in my life, I don’t see any reason to enter a long term relationship where we’re committed year in and year out with no goal in mind. That goal being wedded bliss of course. Makes no sense to me. Nothing wrong with dating but I don’t see the need to commit again unless we’re both on the same page as to where we want to end up. If we’re not in the same place, we can enjoy each other’s company, but I always make it clear that at any given moment, another man could be beating my time.

I know I may sound flippant as if this will be an easy thing. It won’t be. I’m still a woman and we’re some emotional creatures. However, one thing my experience has taught me is that for my sanity (and so I don’t catch a case), I have to start listening to my highly developed intuition. I always know, but the trouble comes in when I don’t listen and act.

Since I’ve come to these conclusions, dating has become easier. Won’t go as far as to say it’s a piece of cake because your girl has been kissing some frogs…some very entertaining….but frogs alI the same. However, I feel much less anxiety than I used to.

I think I’m settling in to the dirty thirties quite well, yes?
