People, it’s 1am and I’m simply spent.

When MSNBC called the race for President Barack Hussein Obama, I completely lost it. I sobbed like I had just lost a family member – only they were tears of joy. My internal button got stuck on repeat as I cried out “Oh my God” and “Thank you Jesus” over and over again. I’m so glad I ended up coming home before it was called because it was NOT pretty.

As I sit here and digest the events of the evening, including his historic speech, I think I’m still in a state of disbelief. You know I’ve had my doubts about whether this country is truly ready for this. Although tonight’s victory proved that we are, there are still a lot of people that aren’t ready for this. A lot of people in those red states are seething with anger tonight. I just pray that they listened to Obama’s speech and will truly give him a chance. The country has spoken.

I’ll be watching closely over the next couple of months to see who President Obama names to his cabinet. I have no doubt his administration will be run as well as, or better than, his campaign. The eyes of the world are on us. You don’t know how many shows of support I got today from people of all races when they saw my Obama shirt.

This is larger than any of us can really comprehend on so many levels. It’s a lot to digest. I look forward to getting away for a few days to really think about it all.

Do you realize we are going to have little black girls running around the White House? An accomplished, so-not-a-shrinking-violet-BLACK woman as the First Lady? Someone I can look up to. Just thinking about that makes the tears start to flow again.

I am so thankful to all the bloggers and folks on Twitter who did all they could to make this day happen. All the tireless writing, information sharing, campaigning, volunteering – it all counted. Most days, it seemed like this would never end. It got downright painful at times. But we made it. So this is as much our victory as it is President Obama’s.

To that end, this is just the beginning. We have to do our part. Don’t think you are going to wake up on January 21, 2009 and your life is going to miraculously be better. We are in such deep shit that I’m hard pressed to believe that President Obama be able to get much done in his first term. While he’s working, we have to do our part.  Ack like you know.

I also think about all the people that lost their mothers this year. I am so glad that I was able to share this special moment with mine. That she is alive to see it. Even my Grandmother, who was a Jehovah’s Witness and didn’t vote, would surely be overjoyed about this. As we all are.

We got work to do ya’ll. This country is a complete mess.

For a while though, let’s celebrate and get our electric slide on. Eat our fried chicken unabashedly in the office and suck on the bones.

Let’s celebrate being Americans and African Americans.

This is indeed a victory for us all.

A Change Is Gonna Come

2008 presidential election, barack obama, barack obama campaign, black bloggers on the election, bloggers pre-election thoughts, election eve thoughts, elections, historic election, presidential election, q-tip renaissance, sam cook a change is gonna come

There were times when I thought I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, been a long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come, oh yes it will

My friends, this is it.

I feel very calm at this moment but I know when I wake up in the morning, I’m going to be quite giddy.

I’m so excited to be a part of history. I’m happy that I truly understand the significance of what I’m about to do tomorrow. Vote the first African American in as President of these United States.

This past weekend as I sat getting my hair done, my stylist was telling me how she asked her cousins whether they were going to be voting on Tuesday. They must have received the same miseducation as Joe because they told her “Naw I ain’t doing no voting. Obama got this. I don’t need to vote.”

Thank God I’m educated and knowledgeable about my history enough to say that nothing but death can keep me from those polls tomorrow. I know all of you that are eligible to vote in this country feel the same way. So no need for me to beg you to rock the vote. I’d be preaching to the choir.

For those of you not eligible to vote in this country, we appreciate your support and well wishes in this historic election. Some of you are more invested than many Americans and that means a lot.

I listened to Dorothy Height on the radio this morning reflecting on the significance of this election. She talked about the days that African Americans had to pay a poll tax to vote and about the courageous men and women who paid for our voting rights with their lives. Today, forty plus years later, it pains me to hear all of that being taken for granted. It doesn’t anger me. I just feel sadness. Pity.

Tomorrow, I’ll vote first thing in the morning and follow these rules to a tee. I’m bringing my camera to record the experience. I’m planning on wearing my Obama tee but keeping it covered until I leave. It’s not against the law in Maryland to wear paraphernalia. But I don’t feel like fighting. I’m all about peace tomorrow.

I’m fortunate to get two hours leave from my job to go and vote. However, I already told them I’ll get there when I get there. I’m fortunate to work for an organization that is extremely invested in the outcome so I likely won’t be penalized if I’m later than that.

That evening, I plan to attend a watch party – preferably at a place where I can actually listen to the results and have access to free wifi so I can blog and tweet my reactions. I’m not sure where yet. Most of the parties will be more focused on the social aspect so I may end up at home. I feel the urgent need to have a record of my experiences and thoughts throughout the day.

We also must not forget about the other renaissance taking place tomorrow – the official release day for Q-Tip’s album. If you have not already illegally or legally downloaded, this is a must have for your collection. I won’t be reviewing it because I’m not a hip-hop head like that and I’d rather leave that to the “professionals.” I just don’t feel like I can do it justice.  What I will say is simply that it’s everything I thought it would be – every single song is fire to me. It will be on my top albums of the year list. No question.

The second half of this year has been filled with such good music that it truly gives me hope.

A change is gonna come, indeed.

Hil & “Pastor” WirthLESS, Ya’ll Get The Side Eye of the Week Week Week

30 day sex challenge, barack obama campaign, hillary clinton campaign, pastor wirth, relevant church

hil_sideeye.jpg

Hil, you should have gotten the side-eye from me last week, but you’re lucky I was on deadline and not able to rant about your shenanigans. I wish I could say you hadn’t given me any more material this week.

Frankly, I’m pissed with you.

Because your campaign has crashed and burned, I must now *gulp* turn into an Obama stan. We already know I was a supporter, but I still respected those that chose to support you. I even said I could potentially support your candidacy should you steal win the nod.

Now I can’t see how anyone legitimately thinks you still have a chance in hell.

What was up with all that changing campaign managers midway through the game? That’s like changing coaches in the middle of the Super Bowl. It was messy and distracting. If you can’t handle your business at this juncture, how can we believe you’re ready to go up against the Republicans, let alone right this sinking ship? Your finances are in the toilet. We won’t get into all of your other foolishness. Then you bring in a Black woman to clean up your mess? Sorry Hil, we got out of that business a long time ago.

Now this week she’s trying to make a federal case out of some words Obama used in a speech? Give us a break. No need to ring the alarm.  That’s his boy. I steal slick shit that Butta  says all the time. Arrest me.

She is grasping at straws and it’s pitiful. Guess America is fed up with getting puff puff passed back and forth between the Bushies and the Clintons.

So Hil, I quit you. Obama has to win the nod. End of story. There is no room for the possibility of a Plan B anymore. Thanks to you, I got to make room on my packed calendar to attend Obamaholic Not So Anonymous Meetings.

Therefore, Hilary Clinton, you get the side eye of the week week week.

On another note, I am giving the definite side-eye to the “Pastor” issuing this so-called 30 Day Sex Challenge in response to the 50% divorce rate. Single people, be celibate for 30 days and connect with yourself (not like that!). Married folks, have sex every day for thirty days straight.

Of course it’s spreading across the web like wildfire. At the time of this posting, the official site for the challenge crashed from all the hits.

My first thought was this was some ole bull-ish. Sexing every day is not going to save a marriage that is crashing and burning. From what I can tell, when it’s bad, you barely want to touch each other and when you do, there’s no miraculous turn-around. The sex was probably not the problem. So hard conversations probably need to take place and that probably needs to be done vertically. I’ve never been married though, so any married or divorced people please school a sista. I’m only guessing here.

However, I wanted to keep an open mind so I did a little more investigating. When I came across this video, ‘Pastor” WirthLESS was on my list!

I’m sure you can cop that booklet for three easy payments of $19.95.

Lawdhamercy what a crock! Besides, he got it all wrong. You don’t need to back that thang up every day. All you need to do to keep your “pet” in line is tell him,” Sit Ubu, sit! Good dog.”

I guess I shouldn’t hate. Watching BET on Sunday mornings can corrupt any “Pastor.” However, I still had to give the good Reverend Doctor the side eye of the week week week.

Let me know what you all think of this sex challenge. Personally, I think it sounds VERY nice in theory,  just not feasible. Besides, I know from experience sex can be used to avoid the issues. I don’t see how it can bring them to the forefront in the majority of cases…unless the issue is the sex or lack thereof.

If you don’t want to be taken to the Pet Semetary, don’t read these comments.

Daily News: I’m Fashionably Late To The Party, But I’ve Arrived…

barack obama campaign, democratic campaign, democrats, elections, kingstree sc, michelle obama, obama, presidential candidate, voting, who are you voting for

by vivrant thang on the daily news

barack_kingstree.jpg

I hadn’t mentioned the elections here because up to this point, I was undecided. My politics seem to most closely align with Edwards, but he’s not even a factor no longer in the race. Besides, I think he needs to be home with his wife and kids. Everything happens for a reason.

When considering Hilary and Barack, both had their pros and cons in my book. I’ve read up on their stances on the issues that are most important to me (economy, healthcare, Iraq, and civil rights). Both of them have plans that I could potentially support. I don’t align with either of them 100% and there is plenty that neither of them have addressed, particularly when it comes to the black community and black women. I’m a realist though. They are both running for President of the United States of America and they have to have a broad-based agenda in order to win. Besides, we have to get our own shit together and hold our own local leaders accountable for their actions before we can get larger agendas addressed (again, I’m looking at your dumb ass, Kwame Kilpatrick).

I took my time in selecting a candidate. I wasn’t going to be swayed by the threat of the revocation of my Black card if I didn’t support the Black candidate, which is what a lot of “Obama stans” are apparently threatening. I care about who is going to be able to reach across the aisles and get people working together to get this thing turned around. (I think there is too much animosity towards the Billary machine on the other side of the aisle.) We’re in trouble and I need to trust that my candidate can build a cabinet that is going to be able to rescue this sinking ship with a quickness.

So what is most important to me is having a candidate that is electable. I need someone who is going to win in November because I can’t take another 4-8 years of Republican domination. I don’t need another “decider.” It seems that a diverse population of folks feel that Obama  is electable, which is also important to me. I’ve finally decided to throw my support behind him as well.

Don’t get it twisted. I won’t be stanning for Obama. I won’t be berating anyone that chooses to support Hillary, despite how gully her and Bill have gotten. I won’t be staging blog attacks against anyone that doesn’t support my candidate or my views. This is America, people. We all have the right to choose…except if that choice is Republican! Seriously, I wish people would concentrate those energies on getting Obama into office and not on attacking people that don’t support him.

I’m not ignorant. I realize that for the first time, we really have a shot at getting a black man into office. That’s huge. I know a lot of black people feel that as a community, we should all throw our support behind him. I reject that. Apparently, he rejects that as well. I’m choosing who I personally feel is the best, electable candidate. For those undecided, I hope that you do the same.

On another note, I am also anxiously waiting to hear whispers on who he might consider as a running mate if he gets the nod. I know he will choose wisely, as that will have a huge impact. Should he get the nod, I hope that he chooses someone with a long resume to allay folks concerns that he is not experienced enough. I heard that just this past weekend from a friend who is supporting Hillary simply because of her experience.

Michelle Obama has also played a factor in my decision. From the very beginning, she has impressed me. There is something special about her. I know that she will be heard and keep Barack grounded. She won’t hesistate to call him on his mess if need be. I don’t see her simply hosting tea parties and keeping mum. She’s too intelligent for that. She will have her say, even if it isn’t until they are lying in bed at night. I also look forward to the possibility of seeing Malia and Sasha grow up in the White House. I know they won’t be acting a fool like those Bush girls. Michelle ain’t having that!

Now I’m not going to lie. I’m still very nervous. I worked the polls for the last election. I sat for 12 hours straight with barely one bathroom break checking off name after name until the words became a blur. I was stunned by the record numbers that came out, presumably to get Bush’s crooked ass out of office. Especially us. I was proud…and later sick to my stomach to see the election literally stolen by those crooks. I see what they can do. I worry about whether a black man…or a woman is electable in this United States of America.

I just don’t trust you like that, Amerikkka.

Although I am concerned that if Barack gets the nod, people will come out the woodwork and vote against him, I am letting all that go and believing that this country may just be ready for a change…a fresh face. I am proud of the campaign he has run this far. I am impressed by the people that are supporting him. I love how he has reinvigorated young people’s interest in the political process. Hell, I like how young and energetic HE is. All of these factors played a role in my decision.

I was also waiting to feel some kind of connection or sign as to which way I should go. I finally got one.

Obama held a townhall meeting in my family’s hometown of Kingstree, SC. He went really grassroots and that definitely warmed my heart on a personal level. My great-great grandfather purchased our family’s first piece of land and built a house back in the early 1960s. He had migrated north with my great-grandmother and then returned South to buy that land. I remember summers down there playing with the pigs and other farm animals. Life was oh so simple then. We just sold that house a couple of years ago, many years after my great-great grandparents deaths. But not before we all gathered there one last time. Brought back a lot of memories. I can appreciate him going to Kingstree, of all places, and talking to the people about what’s important to them.  My people.

Bottom line, candidates are going to say what they have to say on the campaign trail to earn your vote. Some say it better than others. Some are more believable than others. Both candidates have had their missteps, some much worse than others. However, I think people are tired of politics as usual. So am I. We do need a change because this country is headed to hell in a handbasket. Hell, we’re already there. I hope that Obama will be the one to bring about that change once he gets into office.

I will be watching the developments extra closely, particularly since I just accepted a new job that is very politically-involved. I expect to learn a lot. Now that I’ve chosen a candidate, I also plan to get involved in the campaign here on a local level.

I’m not going to lie ya’ll. More than anything else, this does something to me.

barack_and_michelle.jpg

At the end of the day, just knowing that this strong, black woman got his back, I know he can do anything.
