This picture captures just how I like to listen to my jazz.

Other than mentioning how I attend the Capital Jazz Fest every year, I don’t talk much about my love for jazz in this space. I have the feeling if I did, I’d lose a lot of readers.  Hey, you’ll have to deal with it today though.

There is only one song that immediately comes to mind when I think of jazz music. There is one song I can put on that I know will somehow take me through whatever emotions I may be experiencing at that moment. It’s a complex, beautiful piece by two of THE best to ever do it.

You may be familiar with this song from the movie Love Jones, which is where I first heard and fell in love with it.

Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, “In A Sentimental Mood”, 1962

*drops mic and walks off the stage*

Okay, I’m back for an encore.

If you call yourself a true lover of jazz, Miles Davis Kind Of Blue is essential for your collection. Not owning this album would be like having the cornflakes without the milk. I just don’t get you.

Here’s a live performance  from 1959 of “So What” from that epic album, which also happens to be the best selling jazz record of all time. Trane joins him for the performance.  I couldn’t take my eyes (or ears!) off of it. I think you’ll agree.

Enjoy your weekend and be sure to check out the other old school friday participants for some more smooth jazz to get you through your day.

O Bilal, Bilal, Wherefore Art Thou Bilal?

I am truly slipping on my stanning duties.

I saw that Bilal was going to be in Germany back in April of this year. However, I had no idea that he had joined Dwele, Tweet, and underrated German female soul singer Joy Denalane for the Dresden Soul Symphony concert, where they performed classic soul hits backed by the MDR Symphony Orchestra.

The concert was broken up into four movements which included some of my favorite classic soul hits such as:

  • (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman (original: Aretha Franklin)
  • Lovin You (original: Minnie Ripperton)
  • Midnight Train To Georgia (original: Gladys Knight and the Pips)
  • A Song For You (original: Leon Russell)
  • You’re All I Need To Get By (original: Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell)
  • Let’s Stay Together (original: Al Green)
  • It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World (original: James Brown)
  • Me and Mrs. Jones (original: Billy Paul)
  • Betcha Bye Golly Wow! (original: Stylistics – I LOVE this song. The Norman Conners/Phyllis Hyman version will be my wedding song)
  • Sir Duke and Master Blaster (Jammin) (original: Stevie Wonder)
  • Love Train (original: The O’Jays)
  • Everything Is Everything (original: Lauryn Hill – guess we can consider this a classic huh?)

A DVD of the concert will be released. Check out footage of Tweet and Joy performing “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”

The CD was released on October 24th. Many thanks to my loyal reader Soul UK for hooking me up. I’ll share the love by posting a few of my favorite songs. Since re-imagining classic soul songs seems to be the “thing” lately (Kenny Lattimore’s Timeless and Seal’s Soul are recent examples) I am learning to try and not compare them to the original.

Let me know what you think of what these artists did with these songs in the comments. Or are you over albums covering soul classics? I think you at the very least have to admit that this is an interesting blend of talent!

Well my friends, we’ve come to the end of the road. Or is it just the beginning?

For me, it marks the beginning of me seeing lots and lots of the above 🙂

Aren’t they lovely?

For the past few days, I’ve ben rocking nothing but Obama-nalia,jumping for joy like I’m on a trampoline, breaking out into song, and dancingat random no matter who is watching.Seriously.

There are several songs that have been on my playlist since Tuesday. Today,I’m in the mood for my favorite. band. ever Earth Wind & Fire to get this party started! They need to play the inaugural ball (which I’m praying to score a ticket to.) There is actually a chance of this happening because of where I work!

September

Shining Star (YES HE IS!)

And because I’m petty, here’s some “Payback” for McCain/Palin supporterslikethe ones that booed Obama during his concession speech.

Okay, that wasn’t nice but I needed an excuse to post that. It sounds so damn funky!

Enjoy your Obama celebrations this weekend ya’ll.I’m taking a post-election sojourn through acouple of southern blue states. That should narrow it WAY down for you! I didn’t get it together enough to leave any posts in the queue. So we may be dark for a few days. Just know that I’ll be backkkk!

barack obama campaign, barack obama wins presidency, black bloggers on obama victory, obama, president obama, stevie wonder overjoyed

by vivrant thang on president barack hussein obama!

People, it’s 1am and I’m simply spent.

When MSNBC called the race for President Barack Hussein Obama, I completely lost it. I sobbed like I had just lost a family member – only they were tears of joy. My internal button got stuck on repeat as I cried out “Oh my God” and “Thank you Jesus” over and over again. I’m so glad I ended up coming home before it was called because it was NOT pretty.

As I sit here and digest the events of the evening, including his historic speech, I think I’m still in a state of disbelief. You know I’ve had my doubts about whether this country is truly ready for this. Although tonight’s victory proved that we are, there are still a lot of people that aren’t ready for this. A lot of people in those red states are seething with anger tonight. I just pray that they listened to Obama’s speech and will truly give him a chance. The country has spoken.

I’ll be watching closely over the next couple of months to see who President Obama names to his cabinet. I have no doubt his administration will be run as well as, or better than, his campaign. The eyes of the world are on us. You don’t know how many shows of support I got today from people of all races when they saw my Obama shirt.

This is larger than any of us can really comprehend on so many levels. It’s a lot to digest. I look forward to getting away for a few days to really think about it all.

Do you realize we are going to have little black girls running around the White House? An accomplished, so-not-a-shrinking-violet-BLACK woman as the First Lady? Someone I can look up to. Just thinking about that makes the tears start to flow again.

I am so thankful to all the bloggers and folks on Twitter who did all they could to make this day happen. All the tireless writing, information sharing, campaigning, volunteering – it all counted. Most days, it seemed like this would never end. It got downright painful at times. But we made it. So this is as much our victory as it is President Obama’s.

To that end, this is just the beginning. We have to do our part. Don’t think you are going to wake up on January 21, 2009 and your life is going to miraculously be better. We are in such deep shit that I’m hard pressed to believe that President Obama be able to get much done in his first term. While he’s working, we have to do our part.  Ack like you know.

I also think about all the people that lost their mothers this year. I am so glad that I was able to share this special moment with mine. That she is alive to see it. Even my Grandmother, who was a Jehovah’s Witness and didn’t vote, would surely be overjoyed about this. As we all are.

We got work to do ya’ll. This country is a complete mess.

For a while though, let’s celebrate and get our electric slide on. Eat our fried chicken unabashedly in the office and suck on the bones.

Let’s celebrate being Americans and African Americans.

This is indeed a victory for us all.

Well the day is finally here. It’s 1:22pm and I’m now at work watching CNN. Still feeling eerily calm about this evening. Not cocky. Just calm. As if this is somehow destined to be. It’s all under control. No worries!

I voted this morning at approximately 9:10am. I had been in line since 7:02. When I arrived, the lines were already snaked out of the school parking lot onto the main street.

If you’re not on Twitter, here is a recap of my experiences once I got in line, including the music I was listening to. Because of course I had my iPOD with me.

Good MORNING. In line by 7:03. Line was snaked all the way out of school parking lot to the road. We’re moving though! Estimate 450+

NP: Stevie Wonder: Overjoyed

Negro pulled up blasting some ig’nant rap. I resisted the urge to yell “Cut that shit off!” We here on ‘potant bidness!

Mayor of city handing out out sample ballots. Mostly black folks on line although I live in pretty diverse area.

Np: Stevie For Your Love. For the love of Obama ya’ll I am standing out here makeupless with some cuties in line 🙂

Having a one woman party in line to Stevie’s Do I Do. Yup, I’m black!

WTH? Only 12 voting machines!!! I live in an area with several large communities. It’s gonna be bananas tonight.

NP: Stevie’s That Girl. As soon as I vote, I will indeed be “that girl.”

Line still about 90 percent black folx. And again, I live in a very diverse area

Just took pic of white woman with a Obama shirt on with a tree and roots. Haven’t seen one like that. Made me smile.

woman_obamashirt2

Little boy in line has shirt on that says “Life is full of important choices.” Smart momma.

It’s really about to be on. NP: Stevie’s Superstition. Funking at it’s best. How bout dem Steelers!

Been in line for 1.5. Estimate another 1 to 1.5 wait.

NP: Stevie’s Visions. I have a vision alright. Of 1/20/09…the end of an ERROR!

I’ll be recording my vote and hope nobody tries to stop me. It’s MY vote.

Why is this woman in here Deadksins geared DOWN to the feather boa? We need WINNING energy up in this camp.

Struggling to keep my eyes on the prize and not on this fine piece of chocolate man candy to the right. Jesus be a shield.

Almost up to table to show identification. Wait time thus far 1:50.

NP: Stevie’s Living For The City

9:04 I’ll be voting in the 2008 presidential election in about 5 min

I voted and recorded whole thing. Start to finish took a little less than 2.5 hours.

It was all worth it. Incredible experience.

And now we wait.
