But the other woman will always cry herself to sleep
The other woman will never have his love to keep
And as the years go by the other woman
Will spend her life alone

The second most popular post behind my top fifty songs list remains “Other Woman,” where I share my views on women becoming involved with married men. Re-reading it now, I think I may have come off a tad bit sanctimonious. Maybe not though, or I would have hoped someone would have called me out on it (respectfully – cause that’s how we do it here). But it was how I felt at the time – and how I still feel.

I’m revisiting the topic now because of something that happened to me recently – or rather an ongoing situation came to a head. Please note that some minor details will be vague or even completely changed to protect the innocent [read: my black ass].

Earlier this year, I started some side work at an organization and have to go up to their offices fairly frequently throughout the week. My first week there, one of the evening staffers took it upon himself to make my acquaintance. He gave me his business card and let me know if I was ever leaving the building late and needed an escort, he was at my service. I realized he was flirting but I just smiled and nodded. He was somewhere in his mid to late fifties and although I joke talk about pulling a sugar daddy, I certainly was not going to look for him in a place I handled business. I don’t shit where I eat. And he certainly was not going to be married.

Over the course of time, on my way out the building in the evenings, I would stop and chat with him and the other night staff. (In case you’re wondering, couldn’t be avoided because I had to pass him to get out.) But it was cool. I’m a social butterfly like that. I just laughed off his comments about me being “the finest woman in the building.” He broke it down for me how I was like “that there Jill Scott and Patti Labelle” – and somebody else I forget – wrapped up into one. Old men got compliments now!

One day he mentioned that he loved to cook – the other man sitting there co-signed that he had skills. I’m always impressed when a man throws down in the kitchen and I told him that. He said he did most of the cooking in the household. Since he knew I was a “Carolina girl,” and loved some down home cooking, he promised to bring some food in for me to sample. I tried to dissuade him, admittedly not very hard. He was bringing a dish that I hadn’t had in years. He brought it in a couple days later and that was the beginning.

Over the next few months, he didn’t let more than a couple of weeks go by without bringing me something he cooked. Often, it was more than enough to eat on for two days and always very artfully arranged. I would always protest – albeit weakly – telling him that he didn’t have to keep doing this. But he said “I gotta take care of you!” I admit, that was music to my ears. There were some nights that I was leaving those offices dead on my feet – mentally and physically. To leave there with that little “care package” and not have to go home and rustle up something to eat was almost as good as coming home to a foot massage and a listening ear.

That’s how it starts isn’t it?

Time passed. I kept laughing off comments about how “if only I wasn’t married….” Whatever. Just bring me my food. I didn’t take it seriously at all. Just jokes. My thoughts were on my stomach, as I allude to here.

Things came to a head recently when the head of a department invited me to an event. Of course ole dude encouraged me to come out as he would be manning the grill and told me I could bring some stuff and he would cook it up for me.

I came out with a friend of mine and sat back while he cooked up the food for me. It was a real nice time until he sat down and started talking. He got onto the topic of relationships – and of course sex. He went on and on about how that was at the top of his list of things important to him and how a man got to take care of business with his tongue.

He was oblivious to me and my girlfriend exchanging not so subtle glances and mocking commentary. I did not respond to what he was saying – not in the way he would have liked. But I didn’t try strongly enough to end the conversation, although it was making me uncomfortable. The whole thing felt wrong and dirty – because it was.

Before I left, he pulled me to the side to make sure I wasn’t offended [read: harassed]. He said he hadn’t meant any harm. I brushed it off and told him we were cool. I left there feeling unsettled – and knowing that was the end of my “care packages.” I always knew the day was coming when the somewhat lighthearted flirting would take a turn. He just had to get me outside of the office.

In the end, I know this is for the best. One of my primary reasons for never getting involved with a married man is that I believe what goes up must come down. If I eva found out the Mister was taking food out of our house to give to some hussy, that would be his ass. There would be hell to pay. So by the same token, I had no right to do the same thing to another woman.

I shared this story with someone who told me that I was leading him on. Although I know there was never a snowball’s chance in hell that he would get anywhere near this, he probably thought he was making strides. That sex talk was testing the waters. While I was filling my belly and perhaps reveling in the attention a bit, he probably thought he was wearing me down.

Admittedly, “taking care of me” is one of the keys to my heart but only a single man could hold that key.

And I’ll be letting him know that in no uncertain terms.

Lesson learned.

Funny How Time Flies (When You’re Having Fun)

albums to buy, chrisette michele, good soul music, raheem devaughn, rahsaan patterson

by vivrant thang on feeding the music jones

I’m still alive and kicking folks. Time has just not been on my side. I am still working out how to get myself on a regular posting schedule this summer especially since my stats are actually on the upswing. I attribute that to this and my debut here though. Gotta produce content to keep people coming through. It’s not going to be easy with my schedule in the months ahead – business and pleasure. As I always say, you make time for what’s important to you. The show will go on.

This past weekend, I enjoyed two great shows which I plan to review in the coming days – or as soon as I can get the video uploaded. Saturday night, I braved the brutal temperatures again to see Rahsaan Patterson, Kindred, and a local smooth jazz band called Phaze II at an outdoor venue in DC. I always enjoy Kindred. Ya’ll know how I feel about that Philly soul. I’ve seen Rahsaan several times, but this may be the first time I remember really enjoying the show. His voice is always amazing, but his whole disposition has changed. It didn’t seem as if he felt like he was doing us a favor by performing. He thanked us profusely for coming out, even cracked a few jokey jokes. It was just an all-around good time.

Sunday, was the Raheem Devaughn and Chrisette Michele show. Oh, Dwele was there too. You already know how I feel about “CM” as I like to call her. That girl can do no wrong in my book. I was very impressed by “Radio Raheem’s” set. I’ll do a full review at another time, but that dude didn’t want to get off the stage – and I didn’t want him to. I’ve mentioned before that even after several listens, I wasn’t in love with his second album. However, he has me wanting to give it another chance. Now that’s when you know an artist has put on a hell of a show.

This weekend, in the midst of a flurry of planned activities, I hope to get up to Philly to see Boyz II Men perform for free – followed by some fireworks. Can’t get any better than that.

I’m also excited about seeing my favorite band ever, Earth Wind & Fire, in a couple of weeks. I was hesitant because it’s on a Wednesday night, but I can’t miss them. They just make you feel good.

Actually, with all the things I got rattling around my brain, I need to be lying on a beach somewhere or at least underneath a professional masseuse’s capable hands. However, I have to sacrifice for the love of the music. I’ll be purchasing a new laptop this weekend – with a CD drive that actually works. So I’ll be able to load some new music onto the ‘pod. Music therapy, here I come!

Want to know a few of the albums at the top of my wish list? Barely scratches the surface yet I’m already salivating.

Share with me what’s on your wish list. If you have any of these albums, let me know whether they should remain at the top of my list.

This will likely be my one and only post this week as my holiday begins at about 2pm. Days like this, I love my j.o.

Enjoy people!

Old School Friday: Kids Groups

another bad creation, hi five, kid singing groups, old school friday, the boys

by vivrant thang on old school fridays

Thank the Lawd it’s Friday! Last couple of Fridays, I actually stayed in if you can believe it. Not that staying in is always a bad thing – if ya know what I mean! But I am ready to get out and jump start another musically delicious weekend.

Tonight, I’ll be going to hear some live music at a spot popular with the locals for it’s strong dranks and good, greasy food to soak it up with. Saturday, can you believe I will actually miss Bilal to be out at an outdoor ampitheatre enjoying the sounds of Rahsaan Patterson and Kindred. I know, I can’t believe it either. Sunday is up in the air. I have a ticket to see Raheem, Chrisette and Dwele. But I may end up in Baltimore for the African American Heritage Festival, even though I said I wasn’t fooling with them anymore after the way they treated Bilal. I’ll hold a grudge for my baby now!

Anyhow, the theme this week is “kid groups” and it is right on time as I really re-discovered some real feel-good music. These videos made me reminisce and smile. You should have seen me up there trying to do the moves. I was quickly reminded that I am no longer the spry teenybopper I was when these groups were in their prime.

ABC (Another Bad Creation or as I like to call them “All Bebe’s Chillun” ) You know they look like they were really bad!

Another Bad Creation (sometimes called ABC for short) is a R&B and rap musical group from Atlanta, Georgia. They were discovered by Michael Bivins. Bivins served as manager and producer of the group, who became a part of the short-lived East Coast Family alongside such acts as Bell Biv DeVoe and Boyz II Men. BC’s debut album Coolin’ at the Playground Ya Know! was released in 1991. The album’s two biggest singles were the first and second singles: “Iesha” and “Playground”. A cover of New Edition’s song “Jealous Girl” followed. (Wiki)

Normally, I would have posted all three, but we’ve been slapped on the hand for posting too many. So I’m going with “Jealous Girl” because for one, it’s all about that grind at 1:40. Secondly, tell me you don’t fall out when one of them little birdchested crumbsnatchers tells ole girl “Don’t even try it. Well I guess you win some and you lose some. Point blank girl you lost this one.”

The Boys

The Boys was an R&B quartet comprised of the four Abdulsamad brothers, Khiry (born in 1973), Hakim (born in 1975), Tajh (born in 1976), and Bilal (born in 1979). The group started out singing in Carson, California. As an act, the group was very self-sufficient, writing and producing their own music. The group befriended Babyface in 1985. Together with L.A. Reid, the two men crafted the tracks “Lucky Charm,” “A Little Romance,” and “Dial My Heart.” The public loved the songs as well as “Dial My Heart” reached #1 on the R&B charts in 1988. The Boys released their debut album, Messages From The Boys during the same year and it performed very well. The Boys second album was their self-titled The Boys, which was released in 1990. The album featured a hit single with “Crazy” which reached #1 in the same year. (Wiki)

I still love this video and how it spoofs hits like “Thriller,” “Rhythm Nation,” and “Every Little Step” – to name a few. Not to mention I had a MAJOR crush on Hakeem. I am thrilled to see he has aged quite nicely. Himand his brothers are still making music today under the name Suns of Light. Who knew? Their Daddy even has a You Tube channel set up featuring their old and new music. This is a “Where Are They Now” with a happy ending.

This last one is dedicated to someone special. I like the way!

Enjoy the weekend and don’t forget to check out other OSF Participants!

I screamed at the top of my lungs like I had no sense…and no neighbors. Then I felt faint. I couldn’t stop saying “Oh my God!!!”

I miss the hair but HE’S still “Simply Beautiful.” And he’s still got IT!

I have never recorded anything off of the television before because one, I prefer to stick to live concerts. Two, both of my televisions are old as hell (as you’ll see). However, I had to make an exception.

Groove with me, ya’ll.

update 6/26: Well Debra got her panties in a bunch so my video has been deleted from Da Tube. Hope you got to watch it. I’m sure others will pop up because BET will re-air the awards bout fifty eleven times. You can watch it and other performances at the BET site.

Update: 6/27: Sssh! I’m reposting again courtesy of my girl DJ Diva. Let’s see how long this lasts! Get it while it’s hot!

Now pray with me… that he hurries up this way again.

Leave some love on his Myspace page, which he personally updates.

I’ll talk a bit about the rest of the BET Awards as soon as my side-eye heals a bit (hint, hint). Meantime, for a hilarious play-by-play and some major tomfoolery in the comment section, check out Butta’s live blog over at Soul Bounce.

Badu’s Voodoo: Review of The Vortex Tour

Ya’ll already know I was all over New Amerykah before it even hit store shelves. So it was a no-brainer that I would be front and center for the Vortex Tour. I decided to go up to the Baltimore show in early May at the outdoor Pier Six Pavilion. (Yea, I know I’m way late with this!).

The Roots opened to a somewhat nonchalant crowd. I don’t know if folks recognized that they were watching hip hop legends fifteen years in the game – and one of the illest MCs to ever touch the mic. We won’t even mention the uber-talented ?uestlove. There were a few heads up out their seats showing love. Maybe the real party was back in the cheap seats. Just seemed to me that for the most part, the crowd that was there and not on CP time were (im)patiently waiting for Ms. Badu to grace us with her presence.

I thought for sure they would get hype on “You Got Me.”

Negative.

Just criminal, I tell you.

Although it was another consistent performance, I definitely prefer to see The Roots in venues where heads are in the know…where the energy is high. I guess I’ve been spoiled.

Here they are performing:

You Got Me

Rising Down

I remember feeling an unusually high sense of anticipation before Erykah took the stage. What would the she be wearing? What would be sitting on top of her head this time? When I last saw her some eightyears ago or so, she was still all about the headwraps and incense. There was some predictability there. Now who knows what the chameleon is going to come with next…and I love it!

Don’t tell nobody but these pictures were shot by Todd over at ishootshows.com three weeks after my Baltimore show. This is exactly what she was was wearing…from head to toe. I was lucky to find these excellent photos, huh?

I was mildly surprised there wasn’t an extended wait for her to take the stage. Since time is for white people and all. When her background singers took the stage, the girl sitting next to me swore one of them was Erykah. I hadn’t read much about the tour but I immediately said that wasn’t Erykah but must be her sister. I was right. Evidentially I’m very much behind on my Badu news because I’m not sure I knew she had a sister in the business.

The first half of her set was all New Amerykah. I kept holding my breath for my favorite, “That Hump.” It was not to be. Here’s the set list (might have missed a few)

  • “Amerykhan Promise”
  • “The Healer”
  • “Me”
  • “My People”
  • “The Cell”
  • “Twinkle”

Amerykhan Promise

My People

Twinkle

As she performed, it was hard to take your eyes away from the one-woman show. You barely noticed anyone else on the stage. Even as she would turn her attention to her beat machine, I still found myself watching her every move. And that black girl sure plays some funky music on that thing! As she boogies on down, you want to get up there and do it to death with her. But alas, it’s a private party. You can watch, but don’t think you can get with her. As she rhetorically asked one girl, “You think you can shake it better than me?” Of course not.

The crowd, who may not have had time to scoop up New Amerykah yet, really came alive when she went into her classic hits from the first three albums – particularly tracks from the classic, Baduizm. I feel like she would have rather not. She strikes me as the type that wants to keep moving forward, which she will with two more albums on tap this year! But that would not make for very happy customers.

They want to hear classics like

  • &…On
  • Appletree
  • Otherside of the Game
  • Danger
  • Times A Wastin

Appletree

Otherside of the Game (LOVE. THIS. SONG)

In between the classics, she had to remind us that she had some new stuff out! Ya’ll can groove to this old stuff but don’t forget the new. She performed two more of my favorites from New Amerykah, “Soldier” and “Master Teacher.” I particularly love “Master Teacher” because my beloved Bilal throws his voice in the mix.

Master Teacher

She left the stage and returned for her encore with “Green Eyes,” which is probably my second favorite track on Mama’s Gun. We weren’t ready for Cirque de Badu though! She brought out her exercise balls and put on quite a show (and got quite a workout!) She also took the time to introduce the security guard to the mysteries of HER personal vortex. Only Erykah. Gotta love her.

To my surprise and to the extreme chagrin of the woman standing beside me, she ended the show with “Bag Lady” and “Tyrone.” She came down through the audience and “picked up some good shit.” I was over “Tyrone” a long time ago. The crowd wasn’t. Personally, I wanted some of that “Honey.” It was not to be. I haven’t heard of any show where she has performed it. Guess she has her reasons.

Bag Lady

Another great one down in the books. I’m not sure if Baltimore was near one of the five natural vortices. But damnit, we sure created one that night!
